Candy is essentially a way to make random crap that you have lying around into foods that restore 1 hunger and give bonuses. The first step to making candy is by surrounding a bucket of water on a crafting table with sugar. Only 1 candy effect can be active at a time, but some will stack up. Candies can be eaten almost instantly (.2 seconds) and stack up to 16.
Types of Candy-
Cactus Candy- Made by crafting cactus green with sugar water. (Bucket is kept). Restores 1 hunger and gives a 2 minute effect that does .5 hearts damage per second to all hostile mobs near the player. Up to 5 of this effect can be stacked.
Hyper Candy- Made by crafting sugar with sugar water. Restores 1 hunger and gives a 1 minute effect that gives half the speed bonus of a tier 1 speed potion.
Zombie Candy- Made by crafting rotten flesh with sugar water. Restores no hunger but gives .5 hearts of health.
Bird Candy- Made by crafting a feather with sugar water. Restores 1 hunger and lets the player jump 5 blocks high and fall slowly, taking no damage for 1 minute.
Red Shroom Candy (For Icelate)- Restores 1 hunger and everything gets super trippy for 5 minutes. Can stack up to 10 times. (Extra stack timers don't start til the first ends.)
Brown Shroom Candy (For Icelate)- Restores 1 hunger and everything gets even trippier for 1 minute. Can stack up to 10 times. (Extra stack timers don't start til the first ends.)
More coming soon. If you have ideas for new candies let me know in the comments.
This is a really cool idea, it would be great to have more uses for sugar. Perhaps candy could grant status effects that can't be obtained via potions, maybe something that mimics the effects of an enchantment like silk touch for a brief period, although the other ingredients for something like that would have to be rare or difficult to obtain.
Also the mushroom feature would be an awesome mod.

Puzzled on this for a while and honestly I'm a bit stumped. Cocoa beans are still really tough to get and cookies aren't very special now that food stacks so being able to make a chocolate bar that does something really cool would be awesome, beyond that I can't really think of any. Most nether items are difficult enough to get but they're all really important for alchemy, and even though lapis being more useful would be great it doesn't really have any properties other than being blue so I have no idea what a lapis candy could be good for.
I almost think new items would have to be introduced, but I really like the idea of candy in minecraft, it really suits the whole feel of the game IMO. I will continue to think on it.
Also now that I think of it sugar should be an ingredient in cookies since cocoa without any sugar tastes crazy nasty.
How about rock candy? You craft sugar into a 2 by 2 square and get 2 rock candy. Rock candy stacks up to 64 and can be used to restore 0.2 food saturation, but no hunger. You can craft rock candy with cookies to get sugar rock cookies, which restore 0.5 more food saturation than regular cookies. You should also be able to craft in sugar when making a cookie to get the same effects as a sugar rock cookie and a 1 minute sugar rush (sugar rock cookies only give you a 45 second sugar rush). A sugar rush increases mouse sensitivity by 2% and makes you move as fast as an extended speed potion. For 5 seconds after a sugar rush, you get slowed down to only 110% of the speed you have with a regular potion of slowness.

I'm going to add something just for you.

What kind of ingredients did you have in mind?

Your food mod made me hungry, now I must make sandwiches. It also made me wonder if anyone has made a pumpkin pie mod.
Also the candy cane is awesome, that's my favorite one for sure.

Yeah, I think this would make for good mod material, might not fit in vanilla though.
