With 11w49a, you probably know about spawner eggs, so I won't go into detail about their current state.
However, I believe that they have a lot of potential.
First, they should be counted as projectiles, like eggs and arrows. According to the wiki, they don't.
Second, they should be more useful in creative. Placing one of them in creative mode should make a monster spawner. To spawn mobs regularly, left click. This combines another suggestion into an easy to implement feature.
They should have a use in survival, too. They should spawn EXTREMELY rarely from dungeons. Each dungeon will have a chance at every egg, so it's not like zombie dungeons could only have zombie eggs.
So what will the eggs be useful for in survival, you could ask? Eggs could be used for crafting (altered) monster spawners which would spawn (altered) mobs. The way the mobs would be different from regular mobs is that you can't do anything helpful with them. They have no drops, give no experience, and any additional benefits cannot be used. For example, wolves cannot be tamed if they come from a monster spawner, and chickens will not lay eggs.
I haven't decided on what a good crafting recipe would be. Since monster spawners have a bluish tint, it could involve diamonds. Post a suggested recipe if you have an idea.
So, for a quick summary and hopefully answering any questions you may have:
-In creative mode, right clicking with an egg places a regular, unaltered spawner.
-In survival mode, eggs can spawn very rarely in dungeons. These include eggs of all kinds.
-In survival mode, eggs can spawn monsters, and will be consumed if you use them like that.
-In survival mode, there will be a crafting recipe using eggs to make a nerfed spawner.
-In creative mode, a nerfed spawner can be crafted like normal with a crafting table.
-In survival mode, a crafted spawner can be harvested.
-Any destructive habits mobs have, such as creepers exploding, will be nerfed with a nerfed spawner
And if you're wondering what the whole point of this might be, it's so you could
a ) have 2 different kinds of monster spawners in creative mode for making adventure maps.
b ) have a vanilla training room in survival mode that's easy to customize (if you have the right eggs)
Yes to the Creative suggestions.
No to the Survival suggestion of crafting spawners. It would be abused.
That's why the monsters from survival crafted spawners wouldn't drop any sort of xp or items.
On the other hand, I didn't consider multiplayer. Maybe it'd be better if the spawners were easier to destroy and the mobs didn't do any environmental damage.
