Creating chainmail http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/867086-ideas-iron-ring/page__p__11122685__fromsearch__1#entry11122685
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Effects of chainmail:
1.Makes damage from sharp weapons 1/4
-This includes swords, hoes, axes, pickaxes, shot arrows
2.No effect to blunt weapons; Damage stays as if no armor is being worn
-This includes shovels
When wearing different armor
If aiming at the part where the chainmail is worn, the chainmail effects apply. While when aiming at body parts with different armor, their effects apply.

I brought chain mail into the game with balance, as best I could, and also proposed balancing Iron armor.

Chainmail protects you from sharp weapons but is ineffective against blows from blunt weapons
I researched once about Chainmail for a school project.
Yes, Chainmail protects from sharp edges.
BUT A good sword slash can cut through the links.
-just like all other armor durability, they will break once they have reached their limit
