I know this looks like a masive wall of text, but please bare with me! I promise you wont regret it
i have no idea if there is a crafting recipe for the quiver but here is an idea:
This is ment to represent the crafting table slots... use this in the rest of the post
a1, a2, a3
b1, b1, b3
c1, c2, c3
Place 2 lether, one on top of another to get x ammount of lether strap(s),
Place lether in spots a1,2, b1,2 and c1,2 with lether straps in the remaining spot makes a quiver OR
Place tempered lether (smelt lether in a furnace) in the same crafting recipe as a couldron to make a quiver.
Placing a tempered lether(or just lether) or gold in a1,3 b1,3 c1,3 and an iron ingot in c2, you get either a lether sheath or a Gold sheath.
five new slots should be added to the gui of the inventory , three to the left of the spaces, and two under the spot where your character is. the bottom most slot on the left should be where your sheath goes, the middle most slot is lightened up a little untill a sheath is placed, only when its normal can you actually place a sword. when the sword is placed there, a tenth square should be added to the left of the origional hot bar. this free's up a space in your hot bar that would previously be taken up by a sword. you could scroll to this normally or with a hot key labled draw sword in the control menu, defaulted to either ` or z. personaly i recomend z. having a sword in the sheath should lock the sheath slot, so you cant take a sheath off with a sword still there.
The top most slot on the left will be gray, but this is where your bow will go. this will become open when you place a quiver in the right most slot that is under the character space. once you place a quiver there, the grey space to the left of it aka: the left most square under the character, will become ungray and normal once a quiver is placed there. this slot is where you insert arrows, arrows placed here will instantly disapear and a green number (preferably the same numbers used in exp) will appear and stay there indicating how many arrows are in the quiver, max should be between 100-200.
As i previously stated, the top most box to the left of the inventory slots and stuff becomes normal after you place a quiver in the correct spot. having a bow in this spot will make another square apear to the Right of the hot bar, instead of the left (where the sword went) the bow should default to looking for the quiver for arrows. You should also have a box looking quiver on your back when equipted.
The number that appears below the quiver should also appear below the bow on the bow slot when it apears on the hot bar.
Dying means you loose all the arrows in your quiver. The actual quiver gets dropped, as well as the sword and the bow. bows not in the bow slot should not look for arrows in the quiver.
Apon dieing, the gold sheath should have a 80% chance of not destroying itself, and the lether 60% chance, if thats even possible, if not it will not get destroyed.
As a final thought, it would be really nice for a sword comming out of its sheath sound when you have the golden sheath as well as the lether one. and just because i know people will object if i dont say so other wise, no i do not think there should be a golden quiver. it dosent make any sence and i dont think it would fit the minecraft spirit.
Thank you for Reading
Ps. this only applies to hardcore and survival, but in creative your already given a sword, a sheath, a bow, and the arrows that are unlimited because of creative mode, in the correct spot.
