Minecraft is a diverse game. Every moment presents a vast panorama of different possibilities, and brings wit it priviledges and concequences. I propose something that would widen that even further: A choice of species for your character at the generation of your world.
This means that when you create a new world, you will be presented with an option to select the particular species of your character, which would affect many things, from mobillity, inventory space, and size, to FOV, crafting, and food.
Please note that these ideas are not final, and that I am open to comment or criticism if you think that something isn't quite awesome enough. I know that it may be hard to code this idea, however, from my point of view, it would be worth it. It would open up many different avenues of play, allowing for many different styles and atmospheres in the same game. So, let's get going:
Spider
When you play as a spider, you have an incresed default FOV, speed and jump length. Your body size is 2x2x1, and you have a mostly normal inventory, besides the fact that there are 4 more hotbar slots. Rotten flesh isn't poisonous to you, and you may or may not be poisonous to other mobs. Crafting is unaffected, but you always hold items sideways. Boats are bigger. You also have the ability to climb walls and ceilings.
To climb a wall, simply walk up to a wall. If it is one block high and has no overhang, you will quickly clamber up to the next level (this means you don't have to jump much to get up a hill). If it is two or more blocks high, you will walk up across the corner onto the wall. This rotates your view, making "up" on your mouse always go perpendicular to the surface you are on. When you are on a wall, it is treated as an ordinary surface most of the time, but if you jump off, you will launch off the wall, and level out midair. Climbing onto a ceiling from a wall is the same as climbing onto a wall from a floor. If you are going over a ledge (for instance, walking off and down a cliff), you will not simply walk off the edge if you press up to it. Instead, you will just clamber around the edge, only falling off if you jump. This would require much better spider models and animations than what we currently have, and you would be able to see your front four legs, but that shouldn't be the hardest thing in the world to code.
Eagle
When you play as an eagle, you have an ordinary FOV, walk slower, and can't jump. Your body size is less than one block, and you only have the bottom two rows of inventory. Food is normal, but eating time is increased, and all food is more effective. No boats, bows or swords. You can also fly.
To fly, repeatedly press spacebar. Each press beats your wings, and holding spacebar lets you glide. You will tend to face toward your cursor. You can take off from a standstill, but you can take off faster and easier if you walk. If you swoop at a passive mob, it will tend to run away, but if you hit a mob from above, you catch it in your claws, wich lets you carry it around. Attacking down scratches at things (1.5 hearts damage), sideways and backwards pecks at them (1 heart damage), and forwards both (2.5 hearts damage). This allows for interesting combat, and makes up for the lack or weapons. Imagine picking up a zombie, then dropping it off a cliff, or swooping and killing other players? Fun!
Other Notes
-- You can still play as Steve?.
-- Servers can have different kinds of players at the same time.
Maybe if you are a monster, other monsters won't attack you. But Humans will spawn and will attack you. But that would be more to a mod.
That's what I was thinking! I thought it would be good in the vanilla game, because:
1. It opens up many new possibillities and thousands of hours of play, and
2. It's optional, but even when you turn it down it would add much more depth to smp.

More coming soon! (Tomorrow, maybe!) C&C welcome!
Slowly at the moment :smile.gif:
Indeed
Make TL;DR section for the less educated. That should speed things up.
What do you mean? Why is it bad? What's wrong?
Please tell me so that I can improve!
How about that?
Though it would be cool to play as my own species in minecraft for once, swimming around in the ocean and all.
Well, Minecraft is a game where you survive, and all of that, and also create in creative but this idea doesn't really fit in Minecraft.
Why? That would mean that there wouldn't be much to do using those creatures.

Thanks! A mod would be fine by me,as long as it was well made.
Why not? How does not being Steve? make it not fit with minecraft? What's wrong?
