In addition to the enchanting of items, i think that spell tomes should be added. The same principle of enchanting, but on a book. That book could then hold 1 spell, and when used, the spell book returns to a normal book, much like a potion and the empty bottle after use. I had some ideas of spells to enchant into the books:
Fireball: sets ground and mobs on fire where projectile hits,
Frostbolt: puts snow on blocks/freezes water, damages mobs
Lightningbolt: much like the natural lightning, but able to be summoned anywhere.
Polymorph: turns a mob into a harmless farm animal (cow/chicken/pig/sheep)

When I think of Magic, I think of unicorns.
When I think of unicorns, I think of MLP:FiM.
When I think of MLP:FiM, I think of a level 3 sentry.
When I think of a level 3 sentry, I-
Screw it
It's too underpowered, one use after an enchantment? Really, you should apply more details next to just having a shitload of those spells in your inventory just because you aren't going to go back to enchant them all.
I think the idea is a good one. but of coarse it will need to be balanced. and that's something that takes skill, time and for best results, a team of tried and tested designers and coders, which Mojang has. but the things you have to ask is, is it cool enough to spend the time to make? other than say, working on bugs, improving generation or the mod support Jeb is said to be friendly toward. still I like it it might make the the reed farms everyone has now more useful and leveling up pay off more.
I'm still with the idea of element arrows. Every game I've played with tomes got annoying.
I tended to just use a regular weapon because I didn't want to 'waste' them.
Tomes would be like the golden apple of food, no one would use them very often except for jacking around.
