This has probably been suggested before, maybe even modded, but I feel it would add a whole new aspect to the game.
If seasons were to be implemented, I wouldn't want the season to change every in game week or so, I would want a full calendar year, were the seasons gradually change.
Spring: Lots of wild grass and flowers around, baby animals roaming freely instead of having to be bred. Saplings found naturally in the ground, like the are new trees emerging from a cold winter's slumber. Fair amount of rain, but mostly sunny days.
Summer: Crops grow a bit faster during the summer months, because of all the sunshine. Any saplings left over from spring will grow, any baby animals will age. Watermelon will grow naturally in plains/forest biomes, but be fairly uncommon. Almost no rain, but some every once in a while.
Autumn/Fall: any un-grown crops will fully grow and have a chance of dropping more that one resource(such as one wheat pant dropping 2 wheat) because it is the harvest season. Pumpkins will grow naturally in plains/forest biomes. Leave on tree will start turning brown, and will have a lower chance of dropping saplings. Moderate amount of rain, more than summer, but less than spring.
Winter: Crops will grow slower, but will still grow. In any biome there will be a chance for it to snow, except deserts. In snow bioms it will snow even more. Mobs will be less common, but will still appear. Wolves will have a small chance to show up in different biomes, due to the snow and colder conditions. Still water in non snow bioms will freeze, but at a much slower rate.
With seasons it could introduce more friendly mobs, like deer, rabbits, maybe even birds that can be seen flying through the trees.
Each biome would be effected, except deserts. The only change to deserts would be once or twice it would rain there, letting new cactus grow.
Plains:
Spring- lots of flowers, lots of tall grass(even though there already is a lot), raining at least once every two minecraft weeks, baby farm animals occur with no breeding
Summer- Less tall grass, still lots of flowers, natural watermelon growth(uncommon but not super rare), some rain(not nearly as much as spring), all baby animals have grow up by now, crops grow slightly faster than normal.
Autumn/Fall: even less tall grass, few flowers, natural pumpkin growth(more than just finding them reandomly), moderate amount of rain(more than summer, less than spring), see less animals(but they are still around)
Winter: no wild grass, no flowers, chances of snowing(same chance as rain in fall), few animals but not completely gone, water freezes, crops grow slower than normal.
Forest:
Spring: flowers and tall grass(not as much as plains), natural saplings, slightly less rain than plains, baby animals
Summer: lots of trees, not a lot of tall grass, same amount of flowers as spring time, natural watermelons(again uncommon), same amount of rain as plains, animals fully grown, crops grow faster than normal.
Fall: Leaves turn brown, almost no flowers or tall grass, natural pumpkin growth(not as much as in plains)
Winter: chances of snow, water freezes, broken leaves have lower chance of dropping saplings, crops grow slower than normal.
Taiga:
Spring: Some snow on ground, random bits of tall grass, water still freezes(but slower than normal)
Summer: All snow is gone, water doesn't freeze, very few flowers.
Fall: same as spring, but no tall grass.
Winter: Snow a lot(once a week a least), water freezes quickly, crops won't grow outside.
Swamp:
Spring: tons of vines/mushrooms/flowers/tall grass, baby animals
Summer: same as forest, except for watermelon, still lots of tall grass and flowers, more lily pads.
Fall: leaves brown, less tall grass and flowers, some muchrooms but not nearly as much as spring.
Winter: same as forest, water freezes slower than normal.
Mountains:
Spring: tall grass, flowers, baby animals
Summer: tall grass, flowers, some trees, crops grow slightly faster
Fall: less tall grass/flowers, leaves brown
Winter: water freezes, crops grow slower, lots of slow on top of mountains, less at the bottom of mountains(but still a fair bit)
Desert:
Spring: very small chance for rain(only once or twice in all of spring/summer), if it rains, more cactus grows(any already growing grows to 4 high)
Summer: normal, basically unaffected, if it rains same as in spring
Fall: Normal as it is currently
Winter: Normal as it is currently.
Ocean:
Nothing changes in the ocean biomes, maybe slight weather changes in spring.
Tundra:
Spring: snow of ground, but it wont have snow weather, water doesn't freeze
Summer: Some snow on ground, the some replaced with a bit of tall grass
Fall: More snow than summer less than spring, chances of snowing increase.
Winter: Snows a lot, no grass left, water freeze quickly.
Mushroom:
Spring/Summer: some rain, lots of mushroom growth, more tall mushrooms
Fall/Winter: as it is currently
Well as I said in my frist post, I don't want them to be super short. I had the idea of the 'Minecraft year'. It's 12 months, each month has 15-20 days. 12 months/ 4 seasons = 3 months per season. 15x3=45. Each season would be atleast 45 Minecraft days long. And would be up to 60 days each.
How would the snow and ice disappear?
The ice would melt into water, like it does now when you up a light source beside it. The snow would gradually despawn in a similar fashion to breaking it, but without dropping snow balls.
What about if it is raining nearly all the time in the ocean biome? Seeming as you get big storms there. This would make Islands nearly always in rain except summer when it never rains. Snow never falls there and has lots of new squid in the spring.
?
I wouldn't want it to rain all the time in the ocean biomes. Oceans can get really big, and it would get annoying boating for multiple days seeing nothing but rain. I find squids are common enough that I wouldn't need a large influx of them at one point in the year. It would be call to see 'tropical storms' on islands in the oceans.

Yes, it gets rather repetitive day in and day out, of the same thing.

just as it does in real life
