In older versions of Minecraft, specifically 1.8 and earlier, bricks were harder to dig than cobblestone, and were a great median between cobblestone and obsidian as a building material. It took three seconds to mine with any tool, making it a great defender against any enemy, no matter what their equipment was.
Now, however, they are nothing more than retextured cobblestone that is more expensive to get. The tiered system that used to exist between cobblestone, bricks, and obsidian is completely removed
I would like to suggest something to take that place again. This block is crafted like so:
This produces 5 Buildstone.
Buildstone takes 3 seconds to mine with any digging tool, unless it is enchanted. Enchanted tools will be able to dig through it faster.
Now, if you did the math, you would realize that making Buildstone ends up with 15 total dig time, while just using the obsidian is only 8 seconds.
Here are some balancing factor behind that:
Obsidian can be cast using buckets, not requiring diamonds. Buildstone requires you to have gotten diamonds beforehand in order to make it.
It takes a 3 block thick Buildstone wall to be as strong as a 1 block thick obsidian wall, making obsidian a more compact and simply stronger material.
Buildstone takes the extra time of crafting it to be created, adding an extra step to the process of building with it.
Hopefully, this will help make a tier system of sorts with building materials, just as there is with weapons, tools, and armor.
Please give me your feedback, suggestions, and criticisms so that I may improve the idea. Remember to vote in the poll!

Yes, that is obsidian.
Well, it used to be done with bricks, but those were changed to a purely aesthetic block.
It would add a more plentiful, easier to get, but weaker than obsidian building material as a median between cobble and obsidian.
1 obsidian + 8 cobble [is less material to get then] 1 obsidian
???
I say we set stone brick back to 3 seconds so no more ridiculous rebar/reinforced wall threads are made.
1 obsidian takes 8 seconds to mine with a dia pick.
1 buildstone takes 3 seconds to mine with any tool, but you get 5 per crafting.
Got any feedback?
