Recently I was playing on my server with a friend who is new to the game and showing him how to smelt some things. I had my interface open so I could see him putting things in the furnace and he had placed the item he wanted to smelt on the bottom. I moved it up to the top and he put the fuel in. Its the same way with the alloy furnace for red power.
The thing is, you can show people and see what they are doing. But with the crafting table, we all have our own divided experience. Two players cannot look at the same table and watch what the other person is doing, we have to try and describe it or send them off to the wiki which ****s with the immersion factor, plus it feels like assigning a chore (yeah, why don't you go study and then come play).
So my suggestion is this; the crafting table should be public like the furnace. It should have a common grid and output that everyone can see and interact with. It would only have an impact on SMP and since most of us with servers run private with our friends, there isn't much worry about someone stealing your work or any other possible reason that could be given for why it is this way. Considering Minecraft is being used as an educational tool, I find it amusing there is a huge barrier in teaching other people while you are in game.
I'm sure you've all said this before, "It's a T, the X goes at the top, the sticks below." or any other variation. Wouldn't it be nice to just show someone?
This is really the only argument against such a thing. But how would that be different than any other form of griefing? Whether it be some random guy destroying your home, robbing your chests or just killing you and taking your stuff, the problem is that individual and I would hope it be dealt with the same.
Plus, maybe you'd just have to be real quick about it if that were a legitimate concern on some freedom grief server.
I support this. But maybe an option for public crafting so that people can't jack your diamonds while you're crafting a pick?
You'd have to make it so that each player can only interact with the items they've placed. I think this idea has potential though. Especially on survival servers where people can pool their resources to make certain items and tools.

Do you want to play my adventure map, Trials and Tribulations?
