When you travel across the plains of minecraft, you only see natural biomes and occasionally the NPC villiage that currently is good for only some wheat. How about if you see ancient ruins of pyramids and fortresses too. You could also find treasure in these ruins, hidden in crumbled rocks and destroyed structures.
Cool idea, that would make exploration more interesting.

Possibly with a little more detail, but I see what you are getting at. I agree, exploration isn't that fun right now with very little things to go look for.
Fortresses, maybe not. But still sounds like a good idea.
