THIS POST IS ONLY IN VERSION 1. IT WILL BE UPDATED, SO IT MAY BE SMALL AS IT STARTS AND EXPANDS. THANK YOU, PLEASE ENJOY YOUR READ. OR RIDE. DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU CHOOSE.
So on my server, I own a town (which i lost LOL) that has a transit authority. The authority's pretty crappy, really. I wish there was a way to improve it without redstoney trickery thingery stuff. Uhh yeah, so, anyways I want some sort of thing that can improve it! here's an idea.
TRACK SWITCHES/INTERSECTORY TRACKS
These tracks are intersection tracks. These tracks are like addition signs in looks, and take a + of rails to craft.
What happens is that one car comes in at one time. This car goes forward, just like it was, but you put a track switch/intersectory track, and when you put a rail going EAST through the tracks heading NORTH, with the intersectory/track switch, it doesn't interfere and each car may turn or etc.
Say that 1 cart is coming in from the north, and one is coming in from the east. To prevent a head on collision..use..
THE STOPPER TRACK SWITCH/INTERSECTORY TRACK
This is the same thing but when 2 cars come at the same time from different directions the one heading east or west is always stopped. the one that passed a...[gate] passes through first.
GATES
These signals are put next to a detector rail and can be used to stop a train coming inbound/outbound/any direction. This means that if you own a subway station or a subway line you can easily stop a train automatically with a pressure track activated signal clock, like a stop light.
These also help with the stopper track switch/intersectory track because then you can have the one that passes the gate first go through first avoiding a collision.

UPDATE
Update log
Although I've been to lazy to take any screenshots and/or find my town, i think i've got the rest of this in the bag.
i think I might or must add onto the signals, but i'm not sure how to. i think i gave it to you guys too blatantly.
yet, the minecarts will be pretty easy. this whole thing is a challenge, though. i'm not sure what to do.
Also, i have added the buckler/magnet thing. it's reminiscent of the old thomas the tank engine wood toys, I hope you enjoy it.
btw, it's not advertising, but i would love a mod with these types of models http://www.munipals.com/
2 Minecart types:
THE PASSENGER (2 SEATER)
The passenger car is a must have for every train. It comes with 2 seats so you don't have to clutter up the system with millions of cars. Not that anybody's going to ride it, but still.
how i love ocd.
THE TRAVELER (SLEEPING/BEDDED CAR)
This car is a bright silver. What it does is honestly carries around a bed. it's the longest car behind the passenger, but i mean, who doesn't like sleeping on the move? :biggrin.gif:
THE BUCKLER:
I GET SO SICK OF MAKESHIFT TRAINS. Not that I ever make em, its just too hard in the first place. What this would do would be an attachment to all minecarts. Craft it with iron and redstone, then put it in a crafting table right behind the type of minecart you're attaching it to. It's simple, it just keeps it together so it doesn't connect and mess it up.

PREVIEW OF THE NEXT UPDATE
-add 2 minecart types
-upgrade signal description
-give example of my subway.
EDIT(DECEMBER 10,2011):
The update v.1.1 is done. We will start doing a cycle. 1.2 is next, then after that 1.3, then 2. Please read the new suggestions, they're all in the spoilers.
You can already switch track paths with redstone quite easily, but I suppose you knew that. You can also bring them to a stop this way by smashing them into a wall (Weeee!) The other minecarts are useless if you have bucklers seing as you can simply expand the train, and sleeping in SMP is useless anyway.
I do completely agree with the bucklers though, it would mean i can finnally put the furnace cart in FRONT of my other carts :biggrin.gif:
I don't see adding a subway train to Minecraft any time soon.
The only thing you need implemented is a train composition, so
to speak. Maybe if the developers would come up with a way to
tie several minecarts together.
About the powered minecart, it SUCKS hard. Why? Because it doesn't
have enough power to push any minecarts up a minor elevation, not
to mention something bigger. If it can't push properly, then it most
definitely can't pull, so you need power rails and then you don't need
the locomotive, just tie the minecarts together and get on railing...

That's not what I'm saying. I don't want a subway. I want something that
roughly operates like one to make us rapid transit builders with less
redstone knowledge than a cow at least worth something.

I haven't used minecarts in a long time (and powered rails not at all) but if memory serves, if the furnace is having trouble with the minecart, place a second one behind it.
I've also found if you travel straight distances, placing powered furnaces behind and in front of you (power the back one first) it's easy to get in the minecart without it zooming off, and is an exceptionally smooth ride. Not where the furnace keeps smashing into you, I hope bucklers will connect minecarts in this sort of way.

Well I consider myself a rapid transit builder, meaning I cover long
distances over my map to get resources from one spot to the next, but
I m not having these issues. Sorry to say, but for that kind of a system
there must be a price to pay, like it or not. Some things can't be done
any cheaper than they already are.

If the community would be honest, most would say they haven't used the
powered minecarts because they exploited the glitch with 2 minecarts
pushing eachother. After that glitch was fixed the power rail was
implemented, so yes the power minecarts are quite obsolete today.
Still, if one wishes to use it for railing, one power minecart could
move a small minecart composition, providing there are no elevations and
no major curves, but thats highly unlikely.
The matter could be solved with bucklers, that might eliminate the minecarts
glitching into eachother...

Interesting. I knew about the glitch in mention, but I've never used it, so I kept on faithfully using the powered minecarts. In my experience with two powered minecarts you could get up slopes though.
Sure I'll probably use powered rails as the better alternative from now on, but bucklers would still be a wanted extra to keep everything toghether. And ya, I hate the glitching too. It has so many bugs that it's become impossible to avoid all of them...

I admit I have been abusing that glitch A LOT and I was one of those
that couldn't get over it for a long time after its removal. Personally,
I never used power minecarts, but I doubt they could provide enough
propulsion on a long distance. I guess when you put the coal into the
power minecart, it provides power for some time, so if you are traveling
longer, you might find yourself stopping to re-fuel the locomotive,
meaning you have to add coal to all the power minecarts behind.
Two things should be changed:
1.) Add bucklers to prevent minecarts glitching and stopping eachother
2.) Boost the power minecart so JUST ONE can push the composition upstream,
that way they might be recovered from oblivion and put back into regular use.
