Of all the ideas suggested here, I believe this might rank as one of the most implementation-ready.
Anonymous voting. So simple, seemingly very easy to make a reality.
If you don't already know what I mean, here's an example:
A griefer is wrecking your place, and there's no admin around. You and a group of your friends have decided to get together and vote to ban known jerks, and you agree this guy is one of them. Each of you will chat "voteban (jerk)" and he'll be gone.... but one of your friends chickens out. Now the griefer knows who the rest of you are and either leaves and tells his griefer friends about who to instantaeously voteban when they swarm, or stays and tries to get support against YOU (making the opposite effect) from the bystanders on your server.
End result, unless executed perfectly, voting without anonymity might fail.
But with anonymous voting, here's the new scenario:
A griefer is wrecking your place, and there's no admin around. You and a group of your friends have decided to get together and vote to ban known jerks, and you agree this guy is one of them. Each of you will chat "voteban (jerk)" and he'll be gone.... but one of your friends chickens out. However, when each of you chatted the vote, the game hid the chat line, as it now knows to do with any line that includes the first word "voteban" or "votekick." It still knows to rack up one vote each against the jerk, but in this case, he can't tell who's against him. Leaving is his only option, because the bystanders won't agree to vote against people they don't know.
End result, griefers are put in their place, and upstanding citizens, guardians of the server, are safe.
In the rather profane words of my friend Takos_360,
"..so we don't get banned by fags for banning fags."
[Note]
I'd love to see anonymity in voting implemented. It certainly works in the real world, more or less, and we'd all be better off for it. I personally can't see any pitfalls for this idea, and I'd be honored to see my simple yet effective idea in action.
You know how useless vote banning would be in minecraft? Have you ever played a game with votebanning? Call a vote and most players will simply agree because it's easier, or they won't bother at all. Take when I played call of duty for example, because you had to type "voteban ####" only a few people bothered even when everyone knew the player was hacking. In games like trackmania where it's a simple F5 to vote yes everyone votes yes.
Votebanning can also easily be gamed, I have 5 browsers so I could theoretically be on the same server 10 times, I could easily voteban everyone.
Hmmm... didn't quite think of that. Give it to a forum veteran to see the holes in my well-laid plan.
I think I was for a moment assuming that all servers have votekick/voteban enabled (as most of the ones I normally visit do). The idea was really just to improve that system. I sort of forgot that not every server has that kind of ability, considering not everyone is expert at running servers.
Well, it's sure a way to improve current voteban/kick standards, so perhaps it should go under the idea as a request for something that can be turned on/off for the server or even for a 3rd party programmer to consider?

There is no replacement for good ops.
Yes a menu of yes/no banning, like in trackmania and Counter-Strike seems the best solution, it's easy to use and could also be made so that it's anonymous.
