Throughout history humanity has enjoyed a magical beverage known as the wheat potion.
Here's how I suggest adding this elixir to the game.
Brewing a wheat potion is a three step process. First brew a bottle of water with a piece of wheat. Then brew it a second time with some sugar. Last but not least, brew it with a pumpkin (for flavor). Congratulations, you now have one dose of wheat potion.
The wheat potion acts as a damage reduction potion, reducing all injures by 50% down to a minimum of half a heart. However it has a negative side effect too: you cannot see how many hearts you have left while under the wheat potion's effects. So you can shrug off damage more, but you also have trouble keeping track of how much more damage you can take.
Should be fun, situationally useful, and an excellent thing to quaff at parties.
Nice. But if you keeped in mind how much hearts you had before drinking that potion and knowing how much damage each mob does, you can easily see the health bar through your mind.
"For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill."

You're right. But that's tricky to do, especially with varying damage like a fall or multiple instances of damage like several enemies attacking. Plus if you're at full hunger you have to account for healing 1/2 a heart every 4 seconds. If you can keep of all that in your head you'll have definitely earned the benefit. Otherwise you'd have to use this with caution.
5-10 "Wheat Potions" = re-spawn with random gear missing and added, also for 3 game hours you get temporarily blinded by sunlight or a well lit room, and there is a ringing noise muffling all the game sounds.
