we need more people like you, that are not afraid to start experimenting even though it might not even get implented.
Heck, if you want experimentation, let's get going! I was hesitant to post what I've been coding for the past day earlier due to being admonished for it a few pages back... Anyway, here's a couple of pictures of my work on the skylands:
Does anyone have any ideas for this realm (excluding mobs, which aren't my strong point) that they'd like me to test-code? I feel sort of bad including only my own ideas thus far, but I've scoured the last seventy pages looking for skylands ideas and could only find some random ore suggestions and stuff like that.
Anyway, this could be what one of the biomes looks like, or one of the side dimensions, or (if people really like it and we can't think of any other biomes) what the entirety of the main sky dimension looks like. The huge trees still need improvement; they're meant to appear rather bonsai-esque.
Seriously, if we could get Jellomob back, make the daughter threads, brainstorm like crazy for a couple of weeks (I have a lot of block ideas for this realm but am waiting for the daughter thread), and get a few modders to code mobs and items, we could potentially have an alpha-stage mod of this suggestion ready (for both single- and multiplayer) much sooner than you'd think.

Can you tweak it so islands can't spawn below other islands?

I could make the islands less dense, but that might make it look a little sparse in my opinion; otherwise I'm pretty sure I couldn't with the current generator. The major advantage of this terrain over the original sky dimension's terrain (where island overlap doesn't happen as much) is that the islands can be located just about anywhere, instead of being like an oceanless version of the overworld with the bottom of the land chopped off.

That first picture, in the background. Is that a castle?

You can't make a crust, chop it up, separate the parts vertically, then erode them?

Looks amazing. Are those cloud blocks? Because we can't have the sky dimension without those. We just need cloud blocks.
I'd prefer it to be a lighter shade of green, though, for the grass and trees. Maybe something between the jungle biome color and the Alpha green that makes Beta and above players go blind, maybe?

It's actually not that simple. I manipulated the overworld's noise generator to produce the floating island effect in this case. What you're describing sounds a lot like the terrain from Notch's old sky dimension and the Aether mod, and I wanted something distinct from both of those. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) I figure we could use that sort of terrain for one of the side sky realms.
Of course, I'll still try to alter the terrain to prevent islands from generating on top of each other, and I'd also like to get some other opinions on the issue.

Thank you! The white blocks are intended to be clouds, yes. I did try quite a few grass/leaf colors, and actually the brighter colors looked a bit odd against the general background of the realm (sky, clouds, etc.). I'll keep experimenting with the colors, though, since I've been looking for a more vibrant, rainforest-like one that doesn't clash with the feel of the terrain.
I think this taster of the skylands may encourage some coders. It looks epic... I'd certainly take a trip there.
I suggest we give it a couple of days, and if Jellomob doesn't come back, then we reboot the idea on a new thread or something?
(Including what we've already designed)
Thanks! Has anyone tried messaging him yet? If he logs onto the forum but still doesn't reply, then I guess we should consider opening a new thread, like you said.

sugestions;
ruins like that castle but eroded, also village ruins
island biomes (ex: large islands, small islands, desert islands and deserts on large islands, spires (islands shaped like two cones stacke on top of each other;
unique liquid that is the deminsion standard (ex. water overworld, lava-nether, kyther-bubbles (or whatever will be the liquid-like main material (besides water cause its the main material)))
atmosphere fog being yellowish.

I like the ruins idea; that's definitely doable, so I'll be coding it. The biome ideas are nice, so I'll look into coding those also. I actually had a rather ridiculous idea for a new liquid in this dimension -- honey; it would significantly slow the motion of entities that pass through it, it could be collected as a food source, and maybe it could even attract some passive mobs. The only idea I'm not sure about is the yellowish fog; that might look a bit weird -- let me test it.
It probably would be similar to normal village generation, but I'm not sure.
I would actually want to generate the villages using my own methods, since, last time I looked at the existing village code, it was heavily obfuscated and confusing.
Sorry to double-post, but I figure this is rather significant. Before I add anything else to the skylands, I've decided to start the new End also:
I'll get rid of the obsidian towers, obviously. If you have any suggestions you want tested for either the skylands or the End, just ask me about it. I will hopefully be working on the bridges for the End as well as the ideas already presented for the skylands.

LOL. It should spread 2 blocks, and be dropped by giant bees. Obviously, you can't place it directly(no stackable liquid), you have to craft three honey blobs with a bucket, which you can place honey with. Placing a honey bucket on the crafting grid will give you your 3 honey blobs back, emptying the bucket. Honey can be used on food to make honey roasted food.

It should be easy. What kinds of buildings would you want?

great liquid idea it could come out of giant trees and things like that.
awesome, awesome. i also really like how its all spread out and some islands kinda overlap others.
keep up with the good work! the thread seems to have become rather active and productive now, probably because both jakest and pudelhund are rather good coders/texturers.
just had a random idea: pigmen villages, sky villages, ender villages, villages all over!
sky vllages would be rather cool, ima start designing one.

I'll try coding this. (If someone else wants to texture it, please go ahead, since I tried making a few honey textures and they looked awful. It can be translucent, by the way.)

I was actually thinking it could be collected from the yellow-green vines you might have seen on some of the trees in the screenshots. They're supposed to be honeysuckle.
And this time, please think of my suggestion: Do it on a freaking shared forum account. Seriosly, other big topics do it too, just because it's way too hard to do all the stuff by a single person. Also, look what happens if the one has something else to do. Jellomob can use the shared one too if he ever comes back. You can call it the "All Dem Dimension Team" or something like that.
That's exactly what we do for Pre-Prehistoric, and it works fine, so I'm in favor of this idea. Also, if you think you would enjoy coding mobs more than, say, blocks or world gen, then I encourage you to pursue that particular area since mobs are my personal weakness. (If you wouldn't want to code mobs, that's fine too.)
hmmmm, it seems i got 3 options for sky villages:
1. do existent villages on an island (just code it that villages spawn there too)
2. make a group of islands and connect them.
3. just have an entire floating in the air man made structure.
Lol, new random idea: make a castle in the sky with iron golems!
get it?
Yep, I did! :wink.gif:

Yes, it's a prototype I've coded for a sort of sky fortress/castle dungeon. I need more ideas for the world gen, though.
