I have an idea on the world type thing, they're should be different types to choose from, this idea has nothing to do with changing the original terrain generator.
The type ideas:
Normal - Regular world type, terrain gen is original (like 1.8+)
Skyland - Floating land, clouds will be on the bottom (layer 0)
Mountainous - Mostly made out of mountains, will even contain valleys.
Cavernous - Many caves underground, plus many ravines and shafts.
Oceanic - Mostly ocean, the player will spawn on an island with at least 1 tree.
Inland - Mostly land, lakes and rivers can still be found, and oceans are smaller and rarer.
Flat - Great for space on building, will contain trees, flowers, and grass, no oceans, no cave entrances.
Completely flat - Great for creative mode, no caves, trees, or oceans, just open space to build.

I have to say I agree completely with all those, although I would also suggest that oceanic would be a kind of archipelago styled, almost all water but a bunch of small islands.
I love the idea! There's one thing though: I think the ocean one should have a chance of spawning as an archipelago with small/medium/ big sized islands, a single small/medium/big sized island, and have 3- trees, and one-4 sugar canes, as well as a few other things. In other words, I think that a bit of variety in the sizes, items, etc. that spawn in the OCEAN one only would vary. (A bit of change in all of them would be cool)
Now let me just say this. That sounds hard.
