Yes, the legs move. The animations where updated for spiders somewhere in the past few months. The legs used to all move in the same direction. Now the legs move in alternating directions. So when, say, the frontmost left leg moves forward, the second from the front moves backwards, the third forward, and the fourth backward. If I saw it correctly.
And a vertical model for climbing would be interesting, but it sounds tricky to implement, as the space the (regular) spider needs switches from 2x1x2 (x,y,z) to 1x2x2 or 2x2x1 depending on the direction the wall faces. And you need animations for switching between climbing and normal walking, or else people will complain about the way the spider almost seems to teleport itself on the wall right in front of him. It can be done, but in my unexperienced view it sounds like more trouble than it's worth.
What if there was a transition, as if it starts out diagonal, then it turns 90 degrees and becomes vertical?
