Ok I was talking with the group I play minecraft with and we all came to the conclusion that we need a sensor block that could detect mobs or other players passing its line of sight. It would be made out of glass, iron, spider's eye and some redstone.
= spider's eye = redstone
this would allow you to make more reliable mod grinders and traps for greefers, that will work when you are AFK.
though such a block should have its limits, it should have a range of only 8 blocks, and not be able to "see" through stone dirt or the like but be able to see through glass. I see it working more like a laser trip wire, which would be easier to hide than pressure plates. it would just send out a pulse of redstone power when something is in range.
the Proximity block could be placed facing any direction like pistons, allowing for more complex sensor systems.

I think the Better than Wolves mod had something similar to this, and it was really fun to play around with. I like the idea, or at least some form of it. In the BTW mod, they could be triggered by arrows, which enables so many things to be activated at range.
Traps would work well too, the sensor block triggers a set of pistons that drop the floor out from under you. There are plenty of ways to accomplish this now, but a sensor block would make it much simpler.
Yeah, pretty good suggestion. But... doesn't it have a durability? Otherwise will be very overpowered.
How about with every two blocks away an object is from the Proximity block it looses a 10% chance to pick up the object. so that over long-ranges it is a lot harder to pick up a greefer walking into your house.
