a compass that only works in the nether and helps you find your way back to the portal you spawned from, i think a probable recipe would be either

I don't really think it is that important to create a device just to guide you home. It would be easier to add a feature to the compass that allows it to guide you to the portal.
Maybe the iron compass will also double as a compass that always points at the portal where you entered the nether.
