I bet this idea is very common around the suggestion forum, I've searched and looked around, found alot of stuff about volcanoes. And if your suggestion match mine, don't get angry or rage, just politely say that you suggested it and bring me a link as proof.
Having said that, let's move on to the topic article, Volcanoes!
The volcanoes aren't a biome or a block, it's an entity. This entity cannot be seen, but it effects are not to look away from!
The entity is only created when the world is generated, it has a ton of random variables, for example the width of the volcano, the depth, the force, etc...
Volcanoes have 4 different phases, the first one is very fast, the second one is quite long lasting, the third one is the most horrifying phase and the fourth is just a relaxing phase.
The volcano can shift between phase 4 and 3, but I'll dig into that later.
Phases:
Phase 1, Creation:
Phase 1 is called the creation, mainly due to the reason that the volcano is created during this phase.
This is also the most extraordinary phase of them all, I myself imagine it amazing to watch, and it mostly the reason why you would like to get a volcano in the first place.
Duration: Until all the blocks have been thrown up and the hole reached the depth of the volcano.
Procedure:
This phase has a lot of algorithms involved, It starts of with the volcano's position and width, and then, when time comes, it will just blow up all the blocks inside of the area of the volcano (this area is a circle around the volcano, with mid-point of the center of the volcano and width as the radius.) and place them just outside the volcano's boundaries of the volcano.
This might be confusing, so I suggest you to install the famous Tornado Mod created by Corosus and you may get it from here.
After seeing what the Tornado does, imagine the volcano blowing up layers of blocks up in the air and the blocks land just outside of the boundaries of the volcano.
Duration: Keeps on going until the lava flows over the walls created in phase 1.
Phase 2, Filling:
This phase might be considered boring, but is very useful for the player. This phase fill the hole that is created by phase 2(not just a single layer, the hole reached to the depth of the volcano, a variable mentioned earlier.) and fills up until the lava overflows, then it stops and slowly moves on to phase 3.
During Phase 2 though, rare minerals and ores are created on the inside wall of the volcano, mainly diamonds. though they are hard to gather, as just after mining, there is lava.
Phase 3, Hazard:
This phase is the final active phase, and nobody really likes this phase either. This is why you should build a base FAR away from a volcano. This phase makes the volcano spit out lava blocks and obsidian like the tornado mod lets go of blocks. And these blocks fly far!
The volcano won't spit out very much very fast, but it will continue until the volcano goes to sleep(phase 4). The impact of the obsidian blocks will create a crater, just like a huge explosion, just without any particle effect(reduces lag). Lava blocks can stack over each other with no further effect, just like putting lava on lava with a bucket.
Duration: 30 mins
Phase 4, Sleep:
This phase is probably the second best phase, because the volcano will not spit out anything, and the top level dries up and becomes obsidian. This is all the volcano does in this phase.
When the duration is up though and the phases are to be shifted, the volcano starts up in phase 2. In phase 2, it checks if there are any layer to fill with lava, then moves on to phase 3. Which moves over to phase 4 when over. This is an infinite circle going on as long as you play.
Duration: 180 mins

The game has mountains, rock and lava. It's not a far step towards volcanoes :smile.gif:
I guess it's possible to manually build one right now, by involving some dynamite...
