The idea basically comes from potion making. In potion making you add red stone for longer effect, glow stone for stronger effect. What if this rule could be applied to smelting, not exactly the same way potion making is, but having certain items that changes the outcome of your smelting. Here are some examples:
Dyes: Placing a dye with an item that is being smelted will tint the color of the items being smelted towards that dye.
Red Stone: Placing red stone in during smelting will increase it's blast resistance. Making items tools out of the smelted items will also increase the durability or that item. Lets just say the electromagnetic properties of red stone gives the molecules of the item more bondage.
Glow Stone: Placing glow stone in during smelting will double the items being smelted. So adding it to cobblestone would give you 2 stone.
I was thinking it would look something like this.
Maybe make it only available in iron furnace or brick furnace. Also I got no ideas on how it'll effect food yet.

Not going to go all out, but personally I hate suggestions for dyed stone and the like; it's pointless and people seem unable to use the searchbar for it.
If you can find a different effect for glowstone (it gives way to much items that way. If you can't find enough stone then dig down more then 2 blocks, please.) then I see nothing wrong with either of the other two.

I do like the idea of changing the smelting specifics, but I don't think dyes should be an option :wink.gif:...Although I'd like if Notch added colored stone so the game isnt so dull all the time xD but yeah maybe smelting should be more advanced like, how do we even start the fire in the furnace? I like the idea of other furnaces too :smile.gif:
Excellent idea. I'd have to say a brick furnace should be the medium for this mechanic. Brick hasn't gotten any love yet. Also, colored stone would be fantastic, I find myself not using wool simply because it's weak and annoying to get whereas stone is plentiful and strong enough so being able to color it would be a welcome addition.
On a side note: what is everyone's problem with dying things? Seriously, it's like every time someone goes out on a limb to mention dying something, they get bogged down with hate spam that the idea is stupid or something and NO ONE ever says why. What would be the harm in allowing someone to wield a red or purple or green sword, huh? What are you afraid of color? Are you a homophobic that thinks a game will look "gay" if it's a little colorful? WTF?
Well, I'm done. Anyway, I can see a lot of applications for this. Can we get a modder on it?
Small problem with dyes. 15 dyes. Each item that can be smelted can be colored too, as far as my understanding is from your post. Makes too many different varieties. I think it should only work on select blocks like glass and stone. I really just want a paintbrush for coloring, honestly. But, that's a different topic.

I do understand that 15 dyes would mean that 15 more of each item. Though it wouldn't mean more item ids. Most of the items that can be smelted don't have any different damage variables such as that of wool. As for texture, all the items can be made into a simple gray scale and the color added to the texture so there is no or little space wasted. Like said before the grass textures already have different shades according to the biome so it wouldn't be too hard to use practically the same code to change the stone/glass colors or even the colors of a sword or tool.
A big part of the game is being creative and having more colors would help with that. I do understand that adding color to the game won't grow your wheat faster or kill monsters faster. Adding color won't make you fly or run fast. Adding color won't help you in any way or form except to make your creation look nice. Some people should understand that not everyone is playing the game as "how am I going to get past the next day", "how can I kill this", "how can I make this easier"... many of us who play are playing to build. If I want action/adventure I would probably be playing something else.
Also I do know that I could just mine 1 more cobblestone if I really want to make 2 stone blocks instead of using glow stone. This was just an example of how the glow stone could be used. More practical may be iron or bricks, maybe even food. Does this break the game and make things too easy? I think not since you would still need to get the glow stone. As for it being a waste of glow stone, I wasn't really suggesting it to be a 1:1 relationship. I was thinking either the additive could last for maybe 8 smelts(to be even with coal) or 4 smelts.

You put coal in the bottom and smeltable items in the top, that's how...
