Gold armor is useless, but has higher 'enchantability' than anything else.
I suggest something relatively simple...
Gold sword + iron sword = Gold plated iron sword Gold plate + Iron plate = Gold plated iron plate
OR maybe something toned down a bit like a certain number of gold bars surrounding the iron plate.
This will get you iron armor\weapons with higher enchantability.
Iron sword enchantability = 15
Gold sword enchantability = 22
Gold plated iron sword enchantability = 22
How about An iron ingot surrounded by gold ingots, that creates a bar equilivant to a diamond. An iron-Gold alloy ingot would be used for armors and tools. These will have the durability of diamond tools. That seems a bit more reasonable

weak metal + strong metal = super metal which is equal to diamond, hello no gentleman.
Crud, I was hoping that I had a unique idea to contribute, but apparently not, although my idea was slightly different. The goal is the same, enchantable gold armor with the protection of iron.
How about electroplating instead. The recipe would be aone iron peice of armor, one (or more) bucket(s) of water, and one (or 2 at most) gold bar(s). This would create a gold plated armor, maybe represented as a gold/iron checkboard to indicate difference. This would use les gold than gold armor and maybe have an enchantablility closer to that of gold, but maybe not 100% as high.
I'd like to contribute at least one idea I can say "I suggested that!"
