So I was laying in bed last night thinking about Minecraft and what I would like to build later on down the road, and I got to thinking: You know what would be great? A massive sliding door that you can scream open sesamea to all dramatic and such. Then I thought well that can't really be implemented vary well considering what pistons are currently like. Then I thought: you know what could make pistons a little more versitile? Redstone Pistons!! Basicaly, it's a piston that has been crafted to produce a redstone current. So when it's extended it will supply current to the next block, and when closed doesn't provide current.
So a line of them could be extended via one redstone torch, kinda like this:
legend: r = non-active redstone torch
R = active redstone torch
P = redstone piston
E = piston extention
rPPPPPP = no current
RPEPEPEPEPEPE = active current
And I even have a couple possible crafting recipie:
Legend: I = Iron ingot
R = Redstone dust
P = piston
[I][I][I] [ ][ ][ ]
[R][R][R] [ ][I][ ]
[R][P][R] or [R][P][R] The Iron is there to have a conductive plate on the extension for the redstone current to pass through.(obviously)(and sorry I can't get it to cooperate)
And yes they should also be craftable with slimeballs to make them sticky, as should ALL blocks in my opinion, though I belive that topic has already been brought up. (sorry bout the edit)

not a bad idea, you could cut off current by retracting the piston, or apply redstone current by sliding a block in place...
Thats nice, But here is the problam: Why the f**k do you think about minecraft in bed?!
But it won't happen, its not very "minecrafty".
You clearly do not know about tetris syndrome(look up the wiki), and because of that I figure, heck, why not think about it in bed? The images a already running constantly though my head against my will. I'd think it's kinda hard not too end up thinking about it.
But on a side note, what about it ISN'T "Minecrafty"? Here I was thinking that the only limit to Minecraft was your imagination.

it's more medieval- fantasy like. You know, basic tools, bows instead of guns, building from the ground up, zombies. It's hard to please everyone with something being "minecrafty" but it usually isn't modern stuff.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
So it would allow for a large door? However, there's one thing you didn't take into account. Extension would be easy, because you'd only need to supply power to the bottom. When you cut the power, they just retract and stay there.

Right, because everyone knows that Minecarts and tracks, aswell as noteblocks, jukeboxes and the equivelent of electrical circuitry came right out of the medevil era. Forgive me if my history is off a bit.

Until you add power again, then vuala!!
And as for uses... Well outside the really big door, though that was the original thought that popped into my head, but I'm sure through the ingenuity of every Minecrafter out there could think of something else. And I will admit that it does seem like more of a mod than vanilla, but I don't think it's that much of a derailment from the game. In fact I'm one to think the amount you can do with something as versitile as REDSTONE is seriously lacking.
