I have noticed that around half of the people on this server rage at the mere idea that tamable, mountable dragons would ever be implemented into the game. The other half begs and cries for dragons to be implemented, and this causes a pretty significant controversy.
So, that being said, I went and made (yet another) dragon update suggestion, one that I hope might please both sides of the argument.
I'm not gonna beat around the bush, here are the details on my idea.
UPON WORLD GENERATION, YOU WILL HAVE THE OPTION TO DISABLE DRAGONS FROM SPAWNING OR BEING AVAILABLE AT ALL! I see this as something similar to the option to disable structures.
Dragons will NOT be SMP compatible. Not only did Notch already state that this would put too much pressure on SMP servers, it would also ridiculously unbalance PVP. If you really want dragons on your server, I'm sure there's a plugin or mod for that.
Dragons will NOT destroy terrain. Neither will they have the supermassive hitpoint supply of the Enderdragon. They would have significantly more health than most mobs (maybe 25 hearts rather than 10), but they would still pale next to the Enderdragon in terms of health and abilities.
Dragons will be exceedingly rare or difficult to obtain. Details on this soon.
Dragons will NOT be strictly red. I lost a lot of respect for Notch when he said he wanted to make monocoloured dragons. Dragons should be available in several colours, if not the entire spectrum.
Dragons will have hunger. You need to constantly feed your dragon. Dragons eat Steaks, Porkchops, Fish, Rotten Flesh, and Golden Apples (raw and cooked for all). Failing to feed your dragon will eventually result in it dying. HOWEVER, you may put your dragon to sleep, in which case it will be dormant but it's hunger will not decrease.
Obtaining a dragon will be a difficult process.
Firstly, a new structure will be generated, called a Dragon Lair. I don't know exactly what these should be like, any suggestions?
One must locate a Dragon Lair, which will be guarded by a large, untamable "parent" dragon. They need to defeat the parent dragon, and it will drop an egg. Then, a new, expensive item must be crafted, the Dragon Incubator. It is made by putting a furnace in the center of a crafting grid, placing a lava bucket under it, and filling in the 7 remaining spaces with Golden Blocks. Then, the egg must be left in the incubator for several days. The egg will eventually hatch (destroying the incubator in the process), and a dragon hatchling will be spawned. The hatchling will spawn tame towards the player, however, hatchlings are not much good for anything but aesthetics. Eventually, they will grow into a dragon Fledgeling. Fledgelings can fight, and fly, but are not mountable. A Fledgeling will become an adult Dragon, which can be equipped with a saddle and ridden (they CAN be controlled), and also have a ranged attack similar to that of a Blaze's, in addition to a melee attack.
Dragon's combat info
Hatchling: 8 hearts, cannot attack
Fledgeling: 15 hearts, melee attacks do 6 (3 hearts) damage
Adult: 25 hearts, melee attacks do 10 (5 hearts) damage, ranged attacks ignite a mob when struck
Parent dragons and Dragon Lairs will not even spawn if the option is not selected in the new map setup screen.
I hope this would provide solutions to both sides of the controversy.
I like it, but dragons should have different elements. The lair should be 25 by 25 by 25 and found in a different world that you access by lighting a nether portal, but replacing the obsidian with netherrack and lighting the bottom and top on fire. It looks like the overworld, but no biomes. Underground, there are lots of dragon lairs, but no ores. Fire dragons have netherbrick outside. Water dragons have their lair stone, but it can only exist at the sea floor. Ice dragons have ice. Undead dragons have black wool and are weaker than most, but have zombie and skeletons assisting it. Earth dragons also have stone. They are tougher than most, but can't fly.

Why does everyone think I don't have an avatar? Is there anyone who can see the one black pixel.
Please click the dragons, they need to grow. Also, my fully grown dragons can be found in my bio.
If dragons are going to be added, this is one of the best and simplest ways to do it. However, I don't think dragons of different colors should have different abilities, for ease of coding. Besides, it's easy enough to survive without them, why make them really complex when you thrive without them now?

Well, it's a good idea, but probably not logical. Having an entire world devoted to dragons not only blows the RPG aspect of Minecraft through the roof, but also inflames the people who are against dragons entirely.

Yeah, I agree with you. The coloured dragons are merely aesthetic, and possess no special abilities whatsoever.
After playing mo' creatures I got tired/bored of the game when I could just fly over everything, that's why I don't want to be able to ride one.
I don't think there should be an incubator, just tossing the egg or cracking it open with a diamond pick(which is its preferred tool already) and after time it goes through those stages.
What would this pet dragon do? I'm not even sure, it would be like a dog except it doesn't protect you.
I like fighting dragons more then befriending them, the game is too easy as it is.
I kinda agree, but i think the Ender Dragon should be kept the way it is, it should be hard, and if you don't like the ender dragon because it destroys terrain, you shouldn't even build in the end until you have killed the dragon. But i do agree with everything else, but the color abilities.

Be caring, please help my dragon hatch by giving him a little click.

Well, I can understand that... That presents a tough problem for people who want to fight dragons, but not tame them. That's a flaw in my idea; either there's tamable dragons or no dragons at all.
The tamable dragons would be able to fight with you, and would eventually serve as a flying transport.

I agree.
I don't believe I said anything about coloured dragons having different abilities. That was another user.

Before you start screeching "[email protected][email protected][email protected]!", remember that these are SINGLE PLAYER ONLY, and even then, optional.
Thanks.
