Yes, I know very well that this has been suggested before, but usually suggestions on this topic usually make this an improvement of the crossbow, this is far from what I'm suggesting.
Crossbows have strengths and weaknesses over the bow for starters:
Crossbow ammo type:
Arrow Crossbow suggestions usually suggest bolts made of iron, I find that this forcefully makes the crossbow better.
Charge:
The crossbow fires instantly, although the player has the option of imitating a much quicker effect of charging, for aim purposes. The crossbow however, always has a reload which takes as much time as charging a bow half-way. That means that if you are in a large group mobs should prepare to have arrows rain upon them
Arrow:
Arrows fired from the crossbow will fire further as a fully charged bow shot as it loses speed and starts following later. It also, always does three and a half hearts worth of damage.
This is currently only positive, but later with an addition of arrow types, maybe firing upwards in an arc might be useful, with bomb type arrows.
Although I cannot find a recipe for crossbows I want it to be (nearly) as expensive to make as arrows. Hope you enjoy.
I believe that this is fairly unique, and different from the current crossbow suggestions
I have to call on some of your ideas. Firstly the crossbow takes much longer to reload and fire than an ordinary bow meaning this instantaneous shot is a no no. Secondly crossbows shoot their bolts with more force which is measured in pounds than a bow does, for that reason I think a crossbow should deal more damage. Finally crossbow bolts do not have flights meaning that they are in fact shorter range than longbows or re-curve bows.
If it were me I would make:
The crossbow half a heart stronger, its bolts travel faster, shorter range, long delay between shots, and entire iron bolts (two ingots) as bolts tend not to have wooden shafts. I think this is a fairly balanced crossbow as it is good at taking down large and tough enemies like ghasts; but terrible against swarms of silverfish, spiders and zombies.
While I understand your concern I made this suggestion with it being a unique tool not just another bow.
But that is what a crossbow is, a bow. And what you are saying would imply that my idea is the same as the bow which it is not.
What I was implying was that I was looking for a unique weapon with it's proper functions rather than a bow with changed stats for a slight difference. Either that, or somewhere along the line you've lost me.

My apologies Anon, I however, turned off by the fact that it was more expensive and tl;dr on the rest of you suggestion.
