Well, I think there needs to be more enchantments in the game. Here are a few ideas for what:
Enchantable bows: Bows will have the same enchantments as swords, so any arrow you fire will be affected by its enchantment. This solves the problem with most elemental arrow mods.
Staffs/Wands: Notch now has magic in the game, so why not take it a step further? By placing a stick/blaze rod/bone, you get magic artifacts that will help you. A few things would be like a lightning staff, a ghast/blaze fireball launcher, or a stick that can be crafted with meats to create zombie pigs/sheep/spiders/cows/zombies that will fight for you.
Well, thats my ideas. If you like them, please post below on what else there could be in terms of "magic" in minecraft. I'm open to critisisms, not flames, and to those who think "there is no place in vanilla minecraft for any type of spells!" SHUT THE **** UP! its too damn late. If notch is already adding enchantments, the least he can do is go all-out with spellcasting. It would make the game be more about, i don't know... gameplay? I'll stop now, I don't want this to turn into a rant.

Enchantments in no way mean Notch suddenly went "LOLOLOLOLOL IMA PUDDIN MAGIKZ STUFZ"
He has no obligation to make spellcasting of any kind.
If you can't massively Overkill and rape anything that walks within a 20 block radius already, I'm sorry, but you don't absolutely require spells to do so. Magic spells do not, despite your argument, make the game any better.
The only thing I agree with is enchant-able bows, and even that might be pushing it.
No offense, but this game isn't about magic. Enchantments are not the same as shooting fire or lightning from a staff. In fact, there's a monumental difference between the two.
I think most of the people who have played this game since indev/infdev/alpha/beginning of beta would agree that casting magic has no place in vanilla Minecraft.
That being said, if you're in to that kind of stuff, I'm sure there's mods out there for it.
The staves/wands/magi-oh no! NONONONONONONONONONO-snip-
No. Just. Flat. No. Enchanting is improving your weapons, and doesn 't really screw witht he gaming mechanics much. But lighting, fire and death? NO! I'm sorry, but it really DOESN'T have any place in Minecraft.
