I do like the idea of villages and villagers, I just believe that they stll need work done on them. Because honestly they are ugly and resemble nothing to any players in minecraft...
I mean take a look at the villagers now...
then look at the millenaire mod...
They are in much more detail, give them more of a personallity and dont have giant freakish noses...

I think perhaps there should be a compromise, say, different races of people? So you have the squidward people who are like gods compared to humans and live in castles and use these neat and advanced redstone devices, and then you have these normal people who live in the villages and occasionally have mansions or castles.

Well, I do think the villagers should be made distinct from player models, so that it is immediately apparent in SMP if someone is an NPC or not (Griefer: "So sorry, lols, I thought you were a Villager. Hehehe...") and the current design certainly does that.
On the other hand, we were sort of promised Pigmen, and it's what everyone expected. The Testificates just look sort of lame. So what I think would be an interesting variation would be if there were several different varieties of villager. The standard Testificates, Pigmen, maybe a couple more like Cow-Folk and Elf/Goblin type villagers. Then, the type of villagers you find would be random, either by village, or by house...maybe a bit of both where the overall population is race is X, but for every Nth building a random villager of any race is added. This would add more visual diversity, and expand on the "lore" of Minecraft without ever actually adding story.
Im hoping there will be variety of NPC models and that squidward is just one of them. If there were more unique looking ones or normal human ones in the mix its tolerable. But a town full of squidwards...well I'll kill them all.
I agree right now they are very ugly, but even so it'd be worse if they looked like players, already have zombies and pigmen that have the exact same shape, I want some thing different not just a new skin.

The NPCs could look better but the real problem is more fundamental than art style.
I know people like the old school pixelated look but really, there is only so much you can do with 8x8 - eventually you run out of combinations.
I hope we will see some good NPC mods at 16x and 32x. I find these look far better than the default while still retaining the look of old school games.
Personally, the pigmen thing doesn't really make sense to me. I mean if they were in a village along with human NPC's then I wouldn't have a problem with that, or if they were just seperate villages. But if it was only Pigmen villages, I wouldn't like it so much

I 160% Agree you your idea. But do notch read people's suggestion. Let's find out in the next update.
It already does. You have the option of green/brown goblins or animal people (pigmen, etc.)
Anyways, the testificates are cool. If they were human, then it would kill the whole "last man alive" vibe the game currently has.

"Minecraft? Realistic? Really? This is a game where you punch trees to get wood, you can make the wood into wooden planks in less than five seconds, and trees don't fall even if you remove a piece of the trunk from the middle. This is a game where animate corpses, giant spiders and exploding green terrorists emerge at night to hunt you down, farm animals run rampant across the countryside, and you can stop the flow of molten lava with a block of snow."
I've nothing against these Testificates (and I can see an up side for having NPCs who don't look like players), but I'd like to see Notch eventually add human NPCs.
But then, what I'm really hoping for is greater customization. I'd like to be able to go into the Options Menu and set spawn rates for each of the mobs/NPCs, and set which ones are hostile, and how smart they are. Zombies who dive right into the lava and Skellies who are smart enough to stay away from fire. Huggable Creepers and Terminator Chickens. It'd be fun to play with settings like that.
Let NPCs have dialogue and trading options, and you've opened up the door to a more interesting Minecraft and to more variety in custom maps. Especially if there were some way to set a spawn point for an individual mob (I suppose it'd look like a colored pressure plate, but be visible only in Creative Mode). That way you could, say, set a shopkeeper inside a certain building, and give him a walk mechanic (stay still/walk randomly/patrol 4 blocks/etc.), or you could set a guard by the town entrance, or one Testificate as captive inside a cage in a Human town (or vice versa).

Sure, I think they should be human, but the color of their shirts should depend on which village they belong to.

Time flies, but so does my pig.
