Currently, you have to protect your dogs, not the other way around. I have a few simple suggestions to fix this.
1. Dogs should not be affected by fire, (maybe just more resistant to) lava, fall damage, or wall suffocation. The whole point of wall suffocation is to prevent PLAYERS from putting their heads in a wall to see through the ground. Dogs always commit suicide this way.
2. Dogs should have 2 more modes: attack any hostile mob and do not teleport to player.
3. Dogs should slowly regenerate health. Players do already, but since dogs have infinite food level, it should be much slower. Slow enough so that it's not helpful in a battle, but fast enough so that you can leave a wounded dog in your house and have it be healed in a few MC days.
4. Dogs should eat the meat from mobs they kill for healing (and not get poisoned from it since they have good immune systems) if they have a certain amount of damage. This is more realistic and a good thing to have in the game. If they are very low on health, they should go and kill passive mobs for food if they are not sitting.
Rather than dogs running randomly in the players direction, I think they should imitate the player's own movement, but check for fire/fall/lava damage. If there is damage, the wolf will not follow the player to the place that caused the damage, and will try to either find a way around or stay put.

That's a good idea, but I don't know how easy that is to program. It's a better solution than making them immune to fall damage if Notch can do it.
