One of my favorite parts of minecraft are the utility blocks(furnace, chest, workstation, etc.(I know, I'm lame)). But I feel there are a couple essential utility blocks missing which would allow for more immersion and diversity. I find it kind of annoying to look at the same storage chests over and over again. I know there are mods for some of these things, but I really don't like messing with mods for this game, especially considering all the updates. Hell, once the new MCP is released, I might try to make these mods myself.
1. Different storage units.
a: A Refrigerator - Store perishable foods, raw chicken/fish, cooked chicken/fish, milk, etc.(I know food doesn't spoil, but I personally think adding that mechanic to the game would make things much more interesting.)
b: A Cupboard - Store wheat/seeds/saplings/potions/ingredients etc.
c: A Record Rack - Store your music discs, while having stored discs appear in the rack visually.
d: Alternate Types of Chests - Function exactly the same as the current chests, just with a different look. My storage room is nothing but a monotonous scene of brown chests everywhere. These would be different colored wood chests, maybe metal chests, but only for aesthetic reasons, they would function like normal chests.
e: An Incubator - Use eggs to raise chickens. I know this isn't necessary, seeing as chickens are probably the easiest passive mob to find. I just think it would make things a little more interesting.
f: Larger Work Stations - 4x4 grid work station, for more "complex" blueprints. Obviously, there would be to be new items for this to be worthwhile.
g: A Dining Table - 3x3, chairs on each side. Place plates, glasses, and what have you. Insert your food items, they appear on the plates. You sit, you automatically start ingesting food. Great for dinner parties in SMP.
2. Alternate uses for books.
a: Player Editable Books - Books for players to write notes in, such as location coordinates, recipes, journals, etc.
b: Spell Books - Obviously, some sort of magic system would need to be implemented first, but imagine placing a spell book in a hotbar position, which would work the same way as tools, swords and bows. Each use would diminish the quality of the book, and the more worn the book, the less effective the spell.
c: Book of Schematics - An in-game, player writable book for players to plan structures and mechanisms. Instead of what I've proposed for (a), this book would be in grid form, making planning that much easier.
3. Variations of already existing blocks/items.
a: Color Variations for Glass - Just like wool, I've always felt glass should be more than just the light blue-ish white variant we currently have. I'd like red glass, green glass, etc. Probably best done the same way wool is colored, mix glass with dyes at the crafting station.
b: Customized Weapons - Only in appearance. I love diamond tools, but not so much the way they look. Again, maybe put the tool with some dye into the crafting station to give more variations.
c: Customized Armor - Same as above.
d: More Flora - Two types of flowers, two types of mushrooms. There could be so much more. A garden would look so much better with more diversity. Though I have a feeling we will see this happen at some point through official releases.
e: Multiple Skins per Mob - Different variations of mobs, I know this already exists to some degree, and even more so through mods. But I'm thinking, black/red/green skellies, brown/redback/yellow spiders, zombies in different stages of decay, white/grey/brown wolves, etc. When each mob is generated, a random skin for that mod is chosen.
f: Variations of Beds - Solid red bed is all we get? How about blue/green etc., maybe even some patterns.
g: More Uses for Cooking Ingredients - Currently, each ingredient only works for one food recipe. Obviously, we'd need more finished food products. But the idea here would be to have, say Cocoa beans are not only used to make cookies, but maybe Hot Cocoa, chocolate bars, etc. I think you get the point.
4. New Blocks/Ores/Items.
a: New Weapon Types - Flails, Hammers, Crossbows, Whips, Guns?(I wouldn't really call the setting medieval, so I personally wouldn't find guns to be too far fetched), Pikes, etc.
b: New Ores - Silver, Copper, Bronze, Diamondium(for all you futurama fans), Precious Stones(Rubies, Sapphires, Amethysts, etc.), or whatever. And along with these new ores comes.....
c: New Armor/Weapon Materials - Silver Tools/Weapons, again with copper, bronze, etc.
d: Player Placeable Portals - Not like portals to get to the Nether or the End, but portals to travel between different sections of the Overworld.
e: New Arrow Types - Flaming arrows, freezing arrows, piercing arrows(hits more than one mob), etc.
f: More Armor Slots - These wouldn't have an impact on your armor rating, rather they would grant certain abilities, like accessories in Terraria or FF. For instance, a back slot, where you could hold a backpack, allowing you to carry more items per run, or wings(of different qualities) allowing flight to varying degrees determined by the quality.
g: New Vehicles - Only real idea I have right now is a Dune-Buggy or something along those lines, which would work just like standard movement, only faster than running, and only on flat surfaces or going downhill. Unlike Minecarts, YOU would steer, not the tracks.
h: Wall Mounted Clocks - Self explanatory. It could work the way clocks work now, or perhaps have a digital/analog component to show exact time.
i: More Harvestables - Corn, Barley(mmm, beer), Vegies, Fruits, anything really would be a nice addition.
j: More Lighting Objects - I love torches and all, but I find it kind of annoying(not gameplay wise, just brain wracking) that my outdoor torches aren't affected by rain. It just doesn't make sense. Lanterns or other light fixtures would be excellent.
k: A Grappling Hook - No, not like Terraria's, but more realistic. Different qualities of hooks would have varying lengths of rope. You aim a bit higher than the block you want to reach, it grapples onto the top of that block or an adjacent block, and you can slowly(or quickly, w/e) pull yourself up and over.
l: Wall Mounted Maps - Act similar to paintings, but displays a portion of the map you've discovered, probably a specific block or small group of blocks per map.
m: Natural Resources - Imagine how much we could do with something like oil. Can be used for smelting. Can be an ingredient for several new types of items. If we ever had something like a car, fuel. Oil could also be used in conjunction with flint to increase weapon/tool durability, or provide repair bonuses.
5. New Decoration Objects.
a: Player Customized Paintings - A way to import our own graphics into the paintings.
b: Armor Stands - To show off your armor sets. Great for those of use who would like to create an armory.
c: Weapon Displays - Same as above.
d: Seating - 1 block chairs, 2-3 block couches. While sitting on these, game time would move a bit faster. I know the bed basically has this function, but it automatically resets to morning. There currently is no way to speed up to night.
e: Player Customizable Music Discs - A way for players to incorporate they're own mp3/wav files to a new record.
6. New Mobs.
a: More Passive Animal Mobs - Deer, for venison. Birds, for atmosphere, or maybe even some practical use. Bears, more pseudo-passive than anything, like Endermen, which would allow for tougher hides, and allow for hard leather armor(slightly better than leather armor).
b: More Interactive NPCs - Probably don't need to suggest this. I know Mojang is working hard on NPCs. Quest-givers are almost a must at this point though.
c: More Hostile Mobs - I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty more of these in the months to come, but I would suggest Goblins, Giants, Lizards, Vultures, and Demons.
7. New Mechanics.
a: Condensed Mechanisms - Ok, you've just built a huge redstone mechanism to accomplish whatever task you'd like to, well, accomplish. Imagine you could then outline the whole mechanism, then condense it into a single block, or small group of blocks, that has the same functionality. I am fully aware this would probably be the more difficult of my suggestions to implement, but I find bulky mechanism to be an eyesore, and often times intrusive.
b: Perishable Food - I mentioned this earlier, but I think certain ingestible items should spoil over time, making cooking and farming all the more necessary. Obviously, this would be any meat item, melons, cakes, eggs, ect. The Refrigerator would expand the life of these foods.
c: Questing System - A quest system with quest exclusive items(special weapons/armors/tools/XP). This would go great with custom books.
I have many more suggestions, so I'll be updating this when I have more time. I realize a lot of these things have probably already been suggested. I also realize that some of these things are more difficult to do than to suggest, so any feedback(constructive) is welcome. Also, let me know what ideas you like, and maybe we can start a petition to implement some of these features in future MC releases. Honestly, the only thing on this list I REALLY care about, is the alternate storage and utility blocks(this all started because I wanted a fridge for my food), but I felt I might as well post the rest of the ideas I've had.
If it turns out a lot of these things just can't or won't be implemented by Mojang for whatever reason, expect a mod with all this plus more within the next few months. I know mods have been created for some of these things, but I would start from scratch, create my own textures, and bundle them all as one mod, or mod pack to minimize conflicts. Call it essentially a User Expansion Pack.
We a;redy have enough tool tiers thank you. Instead of using the new ores for tools haow about there more for enchantment. For example you can make silver arrows by replacing the flint in the arrows with a silver ingot and theese do more damaget to Skeletons zombies and zombei pigmen. Also although this is better than most wishlits i've seen try and expand. What new crafting recipes, were would you find silver, that kind of thing
Thanks for the input, but a couple things. I'm not suggesting new tiers, although 5 is hardly "enough" when 2 of them(wood/gold) are practically worthless(the only piece of wood equipment anyone should ever use is that singular wood pickaxe in the beginning), but more expanding on the existing ones. Copper/Bronze would roughly be equal in strength or durability, so you'd actually have to choose based on your preference. As it is now, you get Diamond gear, and then you're done(provided you have a good stock of diamonds). New ores doesn't necessarily equal new equipment either, we don't have redstone/lupis tools/weaps/armor. But going deep into my mine just to find 2-3 different ores feels trite.
When it comes to equipment, I'd much prefer leaving it the way it is now, but have more aesthetic options, hence craft a tool with dye, you get a different variant of said tool/armor. I also didn't have much time to elaborate, it was 3 in the morning for me, was tired, and just jotting some ideas down before I forgot about them. If silver were in the game, it would probably have the same depth values as gold, only slightly more common. Then, silver could actually become the "real" 4th tier(again, gold is crap). Better than Iron, but worse than Diamond.
Really, it's the new storage options I would like to see the most. Everything else, I kind of just got carried away with. But by god, I'd really like a fridge. And the details of such an object should go without saying.
I think that it might be odd to have a wooden pickaxe dyed blue to look like a diamond one because it could mess up social classes and all on an smp server. Maybe you dye the tool, but the tip/blade stays the same?
But you still get a
burning stone slab for the idea.

Whoa. That's a little more than a "Couple Suggestions".
Honestly, some of these are good, some are bad, and some are just plain ugly. Let's get into this.
1)a. Food is so plentiful in Mincraft, and hunger goes so slow, that this really has no use. Even if food perishability is added, you can always go out to your wheat farm and grab a few pieces for bread.
b.You can already use a chest, and Notch refuses to add things purely for aesthetics.
c.Same
d.The iron chest could actually be cool if you could lock it with a key. This creates an element of security for your belongings in SMP.
e."Interesting" just doesn't seem worth the effort for programming it in.
f. I've seen a lot of 4x4 grid ideas. But anything you could make in a 4x4, is probably able to be made in a 3x3 with a simpler recipe. I say no.
g. Again, food is so plentiful in Minecraft. No.
2)a. Notch is adding this in the game using similar item data coding as maps.
b.Meh, magic in minecraft is a wild thing, not something contained in a book. Leave witchcraft and wizardry in WoW, and keep Minecraft a simpler game.
c. I actually like this idea. Look at "minedraft.com". Something like this, maybe? it would make large-scale SMP creations easier to manage.
3)a. Seen the idea before. Like it, but dye the sand instead. Makes it better.
b. ...Why? This is stupid. I'm sorry, but if Notch added this, fans would protest because he was working on making pink axes and not dragon taming.
c. (see :cool.gif:
d. It'll happen with due time. Minecraft has begun its voyage into the world of alchemy; there's no turning back now.
e. I like this one. Having differently-spotted cows, larger/smaller spiders, differently-clothed zombies, and differently-colored eyes for endermen would be easy, and awesome.
f. People have been wanting this for a while. I just use a texture pack, but hey, if you want to lobby for this, go right ahead.
g. Cooking does need an update. Right after hunger is anti-nerfed.
4)a. I like more variety in weapons, but not guns. NOTCH HIMSELF SAID THAT THE GAME IS MEDIEVAL-BASED. That enough to dissuade you? HE ALSO SAID THAT HE WILL NEVER ADD GUNS. PERIOD. Sorry for the all-caps, I was really raging there.
b. We need new ores. It's been discussed. moving on.
c. We need more tool types and armor types. moving on.
d. That's what the nether is. A fast travel dimension that allows just this.
e. cool. We need this, moving on.
f. We need accessories. Look at he aether mod and you'll know what I mean.
g. Free-moving vehicles would be OP, would eliminate the use of boats as a quick method of transportation, and stray from the general MEDIEVAL theme of minecraft.
h. Sigh. It seems as if every 3 suggestions here is about this. Yes, we need them. No, notch doesn't feel like adding them. Look for a mod, there's probably one that does this by now.
i. Farming already got a major overhaul in 1.8 and 1.9. Netherwart, pumpkins, melons...we could have more, but it's not really priority.
j. Use glowstone, lava, netherrack fire, and jack-o-lanterns instead.
k. Grappling hooks are OP. Minecraft is not Terraria, and vice-versa.
l. Or you could use wool. Or just carry around a map instead. Not useful, too much programming for not enough benefit. I say no.
m. Notch said no oil. It's final. If you want oil, then play a different game, because there will never be oil in the game.
5)a. This would only be legit if it was limited. Like a spray in TF2, you could only have it in one place in the map. It could work, but it would be hard to limit abuse of this (there'd be so much porn that Minecraft would be ruined).
b. Cool idea. Add this, notch. Moving on.
c. ditto on C. NEXT:
d. Hmm... How about just letting you sleep during the day if it's dark enough? Then we can go back to our wooden-stair benches and leave it ok.
e. The spawn point would be bombarded with sounds of orgasms constantly. Too much opportunity for an E-rated game to turn M-rated. I say no.
6. New Mobs.
a. Venison...Nah, we can live just fine with normal leather and porkchops.
b. Already being worked on.
c. Maybe. Lets just see if they fit into the game before we add 20 new pointless creatures to the game *cough cough Mo's Creatures cough cough*
7)a. That would ruin the fun. If you want to make huge computers, you've got to work to outline every single circuit to get the reward. It's no fun if you can make it once and then have it indefinitely. And what if the integrated circuit contains integrated circuits? Talk about a programming nightmare!
b. First make food worth keeping in large quantities. Then we'll get to rotton bacon.
c. Achievements are already a kind of quest system. Maybe you could unlock new mini-achievement-trees by finding books in an NPC village or stronghold.
Do you know how to program in Java? I do, but making a minecraft mod is harder than it looks. I tried once to make a haybale mod. Nothing complicated, just a new aesthetic block. I couldn't find the freaking .class file to get the crafting recipe in, or the place to put the object names. Minecraft's coding is like a black hole of procrastination and indecision on the part of Notch. Only He knows where everything is. If you can really do it, I suggest only putting in things that you want. Don't go for the lizards, deer, quests, 4x4 grid, tool dyes, and integrated redstone. Trust me, You're better off making a list of things you want MOST in the game.
I'm really sorry that I come across as a forum troll. I realize you probably spent at least an hour typing this up. It's just that a lot of these things aren't thought out well in terms of balance for the game. I mean, GUNS? really? Also, pretty much every single one of these ideas has been thought of before. Use the search function next time, please.

k: A Grappling Hook - No, not like Terraria's, but more realistic.
But you still get a
burning stone slab for the idea.
Along with a
for what he thought was H2O was H2SO4.
