um, the swamps are supposed to have forced transitions. If it was gradual, then you would probably run out of swamp, or you would not notice the swampy effect. Swamps are supposed to be ugly. think before you act, please.
My basic point is that swamps have to be ugly and disgusting to be a swamp. These forced transitions make it so that you get the swampy effect instead of walking a few dozen meters to get the full effect.
I like the dark colors of the swamp, I just hate the jagged transition.

edit: to the people saying swamps are supposed to be ugly, you've obviously never been in a swamp, or even watched the discovery channel. swamps can be dark and gloomy, yes, but there is not a weird jagged clearly defined border.
Users lack the mental capacity to have intelligent discussion, and mods lack the mental capacity to make intellegent decisions... I give up trying to share my intelligence with the world.

It doesn't have to be more than a few blocks, just make the code change individual pixels in the texture instead of entire water blocks.

Yeah, kinda like how we're running out of desert, forest, or taiga. It's crazy man, everything is just all transition and no biome!
Keep in mind that what we're asking for is the ability to edit the biome. For all I care, it can stay exactly the way it is aside from being able to edit the overlays. However, even better would be implementing watercolor.png and ditching the overlay function. Or, making it so that the overlay only appears on water level blocks and not on trees and vines at all, as well as implementing watercolor.png. Or forgetting about changing the water color at all, removing the overlays, and putting it off till later.
if you are only complaining about swamp biomes, then you are not looking for realism, you are looking for aesthetic appeal... in which case, stfu and go hide on your ridiculous floating island, and suck balls that there's no marshland between you and the sea.
Yeah, I liked the look of the swamps in 1.8, they looked very nice, then again, swamps really aren't supposed to look very nice and beautiful, they're supposed to be dark and gloomy. HOWEVER, I do fully support smoother transitions between other biomes and swamps, the sharp transition right now is truly atrocious.
Real swamps are basically flooded forests. There needs to be trees growing out of the water, and they need to be mossy, and there needs to be grass growing in the water as well. I suggest the implementation of swamp-block that is half-block of dirt and half-block of swamp water.
That way you can still walk in the water and not have to swim. And you can have trees and grass growing in the swamp water.

And while you're at it, put mountains and mountain ranges back into forests. You know. Like the original minecraft biome.

Look at this real swamp:
