No, it's apparently unchangable. I think you could change the color, but not smooth the transitions? I'm not sure, I haven't exactly made many 1.0 texture packs.
It seems like a lot of people in this thread don't understand what exactly is going on with the swamp biome. Let me explain.
The default grass and foliage gradients for Minecraft use very vibrant, bright shades of green. So, to make swamps look darker and more faded, a PURPLE color overlay has been coded in to the game to alter the entire zone. With the default color gradient, it still appears green, just a more swampy and appropriate green. In my opinion, the default texture coloring looks fine.
Most texture packs do not use the default gradient. I have the most experience working with the DokuCraft texture pack, so I'm going to reference that. Many many other texture packs have this same issue, however. The DokuCraft pack uses slightly darker and less saturated shades of green for their gradient. Because of this, the purple wash is MUCH more prominent. Swamps become purple.
Swamps are not supposed to be purple. This is the problem. It's not a matter of whether or not swamps are ugly in real life. Of course they are. I don't really think this is what the OP meant. The issue is that unless we want trees and grass in custom texture packs to be neon green in the rest of the world, like the default textures, swamps will end up purple.
I found a tree half-in and half-out of a swamp. This should effectively demonstrate how the purple color overlay works. Using custom gradients, we start with a green tree and we end up with a purple tree:
Texture packs are powerless? Can't you change the "grasscolor" and "watercolor" files? Or will that not work?
I'm an experienced texture pack maker, so I can answer this question for you.
Changing the grasscolor.png only changes the shade underneath of the overlay-- if I made the 'swamp' section of the grasscolor.png white, for example, the swamps would be purple. If I made it yellow, the swamps would be brown. But the swamp overlay will still be there no matter what, fouling up the color.
And going along with that, the borders of the overlay are written into the code of the game, so there's no way to make them 'blend' with a texture pack either.
And the watercolor.png is not used at present. It's there, but it doesn't do anything. (Which is stupid, if you ask me.)

The swamp overlay is controlled separately from the terrain png, so no, screwing with the png will never be able to fix the jarring transition.
Of all the colors to make a hardcoded overlay with... why purple? Why not just plain black? Wouldn't that make the area darker than the rest and then we might not end up with purple grass?

They shouldn't use an overlay in the first place, in my opinion. If they want the swamps to be dark gray, they should just color in the 'swamp' area on the grasscolor.png a dark gray. Then there wouldn't be a problem with awful transitions, and texture packs could easily change it. There. Problem solved.
Gah, wow, still browsing the other thread here. Perhaps you could add some of the purple/gray swamp pictures to the first post as the altered/with texture pack example, so Jeb can see if he does happen to read it.
Steelfeathers, seeing as this petition is of great importance to texture-makers, maybe you should inform the rest of the TAU.
Already did. Although I'm not opposed to going and doing it again. And perhaps getting it put up on the OP....(being a TAU admin has some perks, after all. :wink.gif:)
What kind of transition do you want? 1 biome is one color, the other biome a different color. You can't just slightly blend it in, you will always have a border like that just like any other biome. What makes this one different is that fact that you can actually notice it.
Have you ever seen a desert next to a snow biome in Minecraft? I have, and you can see the clear border between the two. No one complains about that. You have to look for it, this border between swamps and other biomes is just more noticeable.

Ah, well, that's helpful. A couple threads below this one: Thread here. | Post with picture here.
The darkness is hardcoded into the game.
And I tweeted @jeb_ about this.

Notch introduces biome color defining pngs into the game... and then hard codes all the colors anyway. Seriously, what the fickity ****?

I wonder if Jeb is even around though, do you think he might be taking a break after MineCon and traveling?
