I have had this same thing happen to me! I thought that swamps would be a cool place thats like a jungle, only wet and awesome. Instead we get Swamp of Dark and Doom.
what all biomes need in general is more features of other biomes, because what makes them all ugly is the lack of variety
really what other feature is there to the swamps? just the occassional pit and water hazard, what the swamps need are goliaths (those rare trees you grow from time to time) and some hills that can go either up then down or just drop off entirely, some vines that line said pits and more suggar cane sticking up to obscure your vision, and really thats what best describes all swamps in general obscure, you don't know where your going and your always confused and capturing that would greatly help this biom entirely
i happen to like the gloomy feel of the swamplands. its my favorite biome, actually.
but it does definately need some work.
the transition is horrible, and simply adding mud blocks and something along the lines of cattail, would make a world of difference.
maybe even sky color changes when entering different biomes... but thats more an overall idea that would be great for any biome.
perhaps even some will-o'-the-wisp particle effects. (that would be ghostly swamp lights caused by gas produced by composting vegetation spontaniously igniting, with some interesting mythology behind it)

oceans need sunken ships and watery ruins
plains need the occasional tree
and snowy tundras need mountains
