This is my idea, please try to stay on topic, and read everything before posting. seriously. I will report you if you show obvious signs of trolling or stupidity, the latter only after a while though.
What is it?
The hook is a block (like a torch) that can only be placed on ceilings. when powered by redstone, it destroys itself and drops the hook item. It can be moved with a piston. The piston does not need to be sticky.
how is it crafted?
It is crafted with three of any material (stone, gold, iron, diamond), like so ( is any material):
How is it useful at all?
well, every hook lets you place sand/gravel underneath it without it falling. when the hook is removed, the sand/gravel obeys gravity again.
you can "stack" sand and gravel up to three blocks down. after that, they begin to obey gravity again.
gold and above you can catch mobs with it.
iron and above you can hang from it, and swing from hook to hook.
diamonds will deal one heart of damage to mobs when it catches them.
ok, that seems legit, how does this "catching" work?
when a piston descends with a hook on it, it will catch mobs and hold them as well.
when a hook catches a mob, it will de-power the piston that it was attached to, so that you can use it with pressure plates. mobs caught this way will not de-spawn, in case you want to make a house of horrors :biggrin.gif: .
Hooks can also "catch" sand and gravel.
cool, what about swinging?
really, it's just moving through it like water. you can "swing" when you are in blocks adjacent to hooks (with nothing underneath you), making it so you don't need a ceiling made from hooks to have a clever entrance to your base. If you crouch while swinging, you will fall (there is no other way to fall otherwise :tongue.gif: )
I Read All That Post, And It Doesn't Make A Lick Of Scene. Only 3 Blocks Before Obeying Gravity?
Dude Seriously, How Does A Hook Catch Stuff? Its A HOOK
How Does THAT Catch Giant Green Monster Or Zombies?
And Why Only On Ceilings? Make It A Hazard Too, I Mean If You Place It On The Floor It Could Do Damage To You! Think Outside The Box!

If facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. And when that happens, the 10% of us who didn't go insane will be laughing at them.
sorry it doesn't make sense. it could have a swinging animation when it descends via piston. stabbing does tend to make things stay in one place. besides, you miss the point (see what I did there?). this is how a video-game hook could act, not how a real-life one would.

yeah, it would.
