Make it so that instead of hitting a wall of the void, you see the other end of the map, as if the world was round.
Example: you are at coordinates 3200000, 52, then you move one step on the x axis, and your coordinates are -3200000, 52
The other end of the world, instead of the death wall.
I just guessed at the coords, but same effect
good idea, it'll end all the statements about the world being flat so nothing has to make sense (die-hard fans use this as an excuse when people say some stuff should be more realistic).

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
This would be bad because you get the amazing far-lands effect WAY before you actually hit the wall and this would be a ***** if not impossible to code. The only way this would even slightly work is if it regurgitated already generated terrain when you reached a certain area, though you would still get the lag issues and eventually fall down the ghost blocks.
Good luck getting to the far lands anyway.
