I learned in the deep travel of the Minecraft Wiki that mobs originally had mob armor. I question why this (awesome) feature was taken out, when it can be used for stunning visual effects. So armor match ups could be like the following:
Zombies can spawn with iron helmets or chest plates, or a combination of both.
Skeletons can spawn leather cowls or tunics, or a combination of both.
Zombie Pigmen can spawn with gold helmets or chest plates, or a combination of both, to match their swords.
This would only be for visual effects, not combat, or it can be used for combat. If anyone has any ideas for other mobs that can have armor, please fell free to post!

I think it should be used for combat, but it should be pretty rare. If every mob had armor combinations, it would get a little too complicated. I mean, one in 30 mobs of the type should have armor, and the armor shouldn't vary except between 2 different types per mob.
The mobs need a little variation within the groups, I was also surprised to see this early feature disappear into the sand blocks of time. Honestly, I think it would offer more dynamics in combat and individuality to groups of mobs which otherwise tend to look a tad... "uniform", shall we say?
