I've had enough of magma when mining, thank you very much.
There shouldn't be lava everywhere, rather a new block similar to ice.
Stepping on it slows you down and sets you on fire, breaking it releases a lava flow.
It looks like obsidian that hasn't quite cooled completely (AKA, cracks of lava)

That could also be a block that is in the Volcano biome.

I'd like something that looks like a normal mountain from the outside, perhaps with more stone than normal ones and sparse trees. At the top would be a hollow tube down to y-20 or so, filled (mostly) with lava. Every morning at sunrise, it has a small chance to erupt, creating an effect much like if you poured a 3x3 square of lava sources on top of a mountain. After a full minecraft day (two?) the lava would cool into dirt, cobblestone, raw stone, and the occasional ore (iron, mostly). The "tube" would now have an obsidian covering, and breaking any of these blocks within a day of the lava cooling has a 25% chance of unleashing another eruption.
I'm afraid constructing a volcano biome would be tough enough yet alone making it erupt every now and then. Cheer up, kiddos, there is bound to be a mod coming out sometime for this sort of thing.

The main blocks found would be stone and obsidian.

They really don't have to, considering a plate tectonic can split in half at any moment and release its load (all over our face).

Smoke effects, perhaps?
Smoke effects?
**** yeah.
And if you put coal ore in the Volcano there is a chance that when the Volcano erupts a diamond ore appears on the surface.
