For all the people who want a more compact way to make redstone circuits, I was thinking, why not have a redstone dimension?
I'm not sure what it could contain, I think it would have to be more than a blank palette for redstone circuit builders, but the main feature would be that the circuits you build there could connect to the real world, so you could hide clocks, relays, logic gates, etc. But it would also have to be a place you'd want to explore.
If the dimension is affecting the normal world, then it needs to always be loaded in order to work.
If you're just looking for compactness, CaptainSparklez has a demonstration video of a mod called Little Blocks. It's not just for redstone, but that's what he spends the most time showing. You can reduce the size of redstone circuits to 1/8 scale in all three dimensions. Moving parts like doors and pistons need to be in normal-sized blocks, but all the redstone logic can be miniaturized.

Like this could be a not gate:
And an and gate:
And you would get a one-block microchip that you could place with one or two input wires going in the sides and the output coming in the end.

It's actually a really cool website I just found:
Minecraft Recipe Designer
You just drag the items on, name it, and copy the forum link!
Maybe there would be a separate redstone crafting table
or you could craft it in two parts and craft the two microchips together.
