We all know that while the minecraft world is fairly deep, it is too shallow overall. However, as I suppose most of you know: Making the world taller would only cause lag. So what do I suggest? Well, continue reading if you care.
It's popular theory that because the nether has bedrock as a ceiling and our overworld has bedrock on the bottom, the nether is directly underneath us. Well, that's not exactly a required trait, I don't think.
I think that a solution to the shallow world would be -somewhat- rare holes in the bedrock layer, which continue into the void we all know and love. I propose that when you enter the black, murky void, a loading screen like the nether one would show up, saying "Entering the Deeps" (Well, err, the name is definitely up for change :tongue.gif: ) , which would lead into a world similar to ours, but with no sky. Basically, a solid block of stone with big caves in it like the underground.
This would not only add atmosphere to the game, and give it greater depth, it would solve other problems as well. You may know that the main reason we can't have many more types of ore is because if we did, the ones we have would either have to be more rare, or ore in general would be too common. Down here, there could easily be new types! As commented on this thread, mob types are another aspect that could be built on to with this idea as well.
Honestly, under this "dimension" could logically be more dimensions like it, until your hearts content. Overworld, deeps, deeper, deeper yet, even deeper, deepest, then nether. :tongue.gif: Clearly that's not exactly reasonable, but my point is that it COULD be like that.
Thank you for reading through this; I know it was probably boring. Please leave feedback, and if you have any sort of opinion on it, whether negative or positive, post comments! It will help keep the thread alive. :wink.gif:
Those loading screens could be avoided altogether, aswell, with the world being just as deep. If the game used cubic chunks, this would work, providing as little limitation up and down as it does laterally. Look up Robinton's Cubic Chunks mod, it does this, and I see no reason why this shouldn't be a vanilla Minecraft feature.
Thank you all for commenting.
Bioshock_Rules: Lol, sorry.
Gtrac3r08: That would be nice, and more likely than it getting added.
Metasponge64: Yes, mobs too! Adding that next to the ores.
Greatorder: Hm, not useless, maybe not exciting though. I get what you mean. And maybe they do, I'm not sure. But I know plenty of people who want it downwards too :smile.gif:
LOgicaltightrope: Yes, cubic chunks would work too, but wouldn't that take up a lot of memory as you explored and travelled those ways? It works for having a deeper/taller world, but not exactly for the memory aspect. But before you've been there it would work.
Homem Pigman: As with every feature like this in minecraft, if you don't like caves or the underground, you wouldn't have to go there.
Matioshka: It would be a loading screen when you entered the place, and you'd come out gently there. Like when you enter the nether.

But why would Notch waste time on this? If you want more cave content, add in the overworld caves. If you want more caves, dig horizontally. No need for a new realm.
And try to THINK on an argument. Ignoring a feature doesn't make it better, and I have the right to say cricticism.
If you have great ideas for what could make caves more interesting - you presented none in your post, just the world idea - feel free to post them. But, I'm sorry, a whole new world for that is a plain bad design choice.

That was confusing..
