I have been thinking for a while about this now and I think it would be a really good idea to have customizable boats. Like being able to make large boats or small boats. I was also thinking maybe having a way like building a dry dock with a new tool, the hammer. This tool would be specifically designed to make a dry dock and regular dock. Once you make the dry dock anything placed inside of the dry dock would become part of the construction of a boat. You could customize the boat to your liking with blocks you gather like usual, but this time your designing a boat. Once you finish the boat you have to craft something to turn it into a boat, the captain's seat. I haven't thought of how you make it yet, but whatever pattern is used to make the captain's seat will always be the same like any other object, except you can use any material to make it; diamond, iron, and pretty much all ore, and even leather. Once you craft the captain's chair you can place it wherever you want on the ship. Once you place it on the ship it becomes a boat, but there is one more thing you have to do, you have to open the dry dock. Now to do that I have one more piece to make the dry dock. The piece opens the dry dock to water to lift the boat and allow you to take her out to sea or a ships dock which I will now explain. You can make a ships dock with the hammer just like the dry dock, except the design is like a regular dock, but you can customize the dock. I don't know can already turn string to rope, but if you can't you would make it with this design. You could make like three pieces of rope from the inventory crafting area being completely filled so like four pieces of string. With the rope you would have the ability, when your boat is next to the dock, to tie it to the dock. Also, to make the sea more interesting, I was thinking add really cool sea monsters, like the kracken or giant squid. To defeat them you could use a cannon which would also be a new recipe. I don't know how it would be made, but it would require gun powder from creepers. If you didn't kill it or run out of cannonballs in your cannon you would meet your fate, because some would be able to damage your ship, making holes and making it start sinking. You would be able to patch it up though if you got there fast enough. I think this would be a wonderful edition to the Minecraft world. It would also make the gigantic ocean biomes a little more interesting. Let me know what you think of this idea. :biggrin.gif:
Small boats for rivers and large boats can fit in the vast sea of the ocean biome.
Rivers end eventually and through most of the singleplayer worlds I have (10) only 3 of those 10 I have discovered vast oceans by having to walk due to rivers ending

(not hating just my opinion)
What I mean is you could make a small boat for just a quick travel up river and if your near an ocean you could make a large boat. The large boats would also be useful for the people on the many small islands of the ocean biomes. you could also still make the default, basic small boat, but making your own would be cool just for the customization.

Oh, sorry I misunderstood what you were saying (Fail on my part).Since you've eplained it better I would fully support this idea. (Sorry for me failing to understand what you meant XD)

It's ok. I should have gave a better explanation. Thanks for the support! :cool.gif:
This seems awesome. Here's a bit of an extension though;
When you get in your ship, gears would appear on top of your HP meter (the armor meter would be moved to above your hunger) and instead of starting to sink when hit, you'd lose gears, which would also be divided up exactly like your HP meter. Instead of splitting in half, though, they would just appear dented a bit when half-a-gear's worth damage is dealt to you. When you lose all your gears, if using a ship with a level above wood, you explode, game-overing your character as well. If using wood, your ship would just drop some of the materials needed to create it as well as some of its' mini-inventory.
Instead of Custom-Building it block by block (there's a mod for that), you could create ship parts in the crafting table using their respective materials, and place them near the dry-dock, which is the only area you could attach new parts from. some even having chain recipes;
Small wooden hull:
Takes boat's recipe, adds more challenge. Does not move unless in flowing water on its own. Only accepts two other mechanisms onto itself, demonstrated later.
Small sail:
Can attach to any ship, but will only have an effect other than decoration when attached to a small wooden hull. Makes you move forward in the conventional method, but only forward. If attached to a mast, acts as a flag, purely aesthetic.
Small Steering Mechanism:
Can attach to any ship, but will only have a use other than enhancement when attached to a small wooden hull. Allows for steering when used with sail, otherwise worthless.
Wooden prow:
Part of big wooden hull.
Wooden deck:
(Log = Wood stairway)
Part of big wooden hull.
Wooden bridge:
Part of big wooden hull.
Control deck:
(Stick = Fence)
Used in all "big" ships with a sail.
Big wooden hull:
(Chest = Wooden prow)
(Log = Wooden deck)
(Workbench = Wooden bridge)
(Furnace = Control deck)
The base ship part you initially build on at the dry docks. Remember, this is a wooden ship and a cannon would capsize the thing from sheer force, so any weapons besides archers and swords are out of the question. Since an engine would weigh the thing down beyond any chance of travel as well as create an obvious weak spot for enemy ships, you'll have to use a sail until you get an iron or stronger ship hull.
Mast:
Attached to the big wooden hull, allows for sails.
Sail:
Attached to mast, allows for movement, but no steering.
Wooden rudder:
Attached to the back of the Wooden hull. Allows for steering.
To start assembly, right click with the hammer in a spot. It will tell you whether or not it is eligible for a dry dock/dock. If it's eligible for one, it will inform you and you can right click for yes or left click for no. If you select "no" on the first choice you are prompted with, you are asked if you would like to set up one of the other type. Then, once a basic premade starter dry dock/dock is automatically generated, you can either 1 start building your ship or 2 modify the dock before proceeding. You build your ship by right clicking with the appropriate parts in the appropriate places.
...And that's all I'm gonna say for now. Spent an hour typing this anyway.
