Have your ever seen a wolf attacking a sheep?
That's pretty neat, right?
Well, why not have mobs do even more stuff on their own?
Food:
Cows, Sheep, and Pigs should have some sort of Hunger to them. Every now and then, they'd lean their heads down and eat some grass, turning it into dirt. This'd require players to give them a large amount of space to graze, so they wouldn't be able to have tiny, crampt super-farms. If they didn't get any grass to eat, they would eventually starve to death and die, meaning that any animals stuck in holes would starve. Something could also be added to their AI that would make them want to stay by grass, so they would leave deserts and stay in grassy places, which would also prevent them from wandering into caves.
Breeding:
Occasionally, animals would starve to death or just die of old age. In real life, animals do not rely on humans to be able to breed. They should be able to breed with eachother occasionally, only to compensate for those who die through starvation or old age.
Herds of animals:
Animals would generally stay with animals of their own type. There would be a maximum limit to the size of these herds, so they wouldn't get to large, but you would always find animals sticking together. Wolves would also travel together in packs.
Sleeping:
Animals would sleep at night. This would mean that their legs would fold up and they would lie on the ground, maybe with little "Z" particles flowing out of their noses. This would limit the movement of animals.
Milk:
If you milk a cow, it would not give milk again until about 3 minutes have passed.
Impact:
This would result in a more natural feel to the mobs of the game, such as them traveling in herds, staying by grass, and growing on their own. It would also require for players to take up lots of space and have larger farms.
I hit the Enter key thinking that it'd go to a new line, but it posted this when it's wasn't finished. :L
It's a good idea; it doesn't add a whole lot, but it would add more atmosphere to the game, especially the part about the herds. I don't think there needs to be the natural breeding, but I think the sleeping animals could be absolutely adorable if they were done correctly. :3
Very good ideas, all of them! I just wonder, if monsters will breed by themselves, that means we will see chicken nests and deadly wolf moms protecting their puppies?

Animal AI is one of the main problems in Minecraft at the moment in my opinion. These suggestions would make the behavior more realistic, which would fix that problem.
However, what I mainly want fixed is villager AI. Villagers have the same AI as animals, which is quite honestly, horrible.
