just had an idea to help distinguish between wolves, why not give them different colours of collars. Each collar would be crafted by putting 8 blocks of wool
To tame a wolf you would simply give it one of these collars, and to change the behaviors and stats you would just give it a new one, it's old collar would fall on the ground to be looted.
Legend
color of the collar
(overall description)
{description of trait bonuses}
some will be well rounded (as they are in the current game){smaller bonuses to all stats}
some will be be supportive (less damage on its own, but increases damage and armor of nearby wolves/players)
some will be disruptive (tackles enemies, pushing them a fair distance but doing little damage)
some will be sneakier (enemies won't notice it until it attacks, when it attacks it disorients the target for a few seconds and does bonus damage)
Some more aggressive (actively hunts enemies, follows ahead/very far from Steve){bonus to damage and speed}
some will be more independent (Will hunt and eat passive mobs to recover its own health).
Some will be quick (runs at sprinting speed whenever on land)
some will be poisonous (additional damage over time for anything bit by it)
Some more protective (more health, staying closer to Steve, willing to sacrifice himself to save you from creepers if you are at low health).
some will be faster swimmers (swim as fast as a full speed boat)
some will be enveloping (jumps on an enemy, pinning it and keeping to from attacking)
Some more intelligent (better for finding paths that don't involve fall damage and avoid lava. In combat they work to use their environment to hurt enemies).
some will be manipulative (does not attack but causes a enemy to fight it's allies)
some will be distracting (calls enemies towards itself then runs) {faster run speed)
some will be seductive (enemies won't attack it, nearby wild wolves will come to it's aid)
some will be more hearty (eats raw meat for the same health bonus as cooked meat)
on another note you could increase the total health of the wolf via studded collars. by taking the collar in the middle of a workbench and putting 8 iron ingots or diamonds around it you make a studded collar.
Thank you for reading, please feel free to give feedback, additional ideas, or pictures of kittens.
If you know who the man in my avatar is without googling/looking at my profile then you know how big things can start and how other people get blamed for it.
Sounds quite interesting and is a great idea! I'd love to see this implemented! It would be very efficient and I'm sure it would be supported by most players!

So like if the wolf ate its poop then bit someone. (Got the idea from my dogs, they eat their poop even though we feed them twice a day.)
