This is basically trees have roots extending into the ground, and 9 roots equal 1 wood. This would add basically a little more wood, and a little more realism to the game. This may be a stupid idea, so tell me if it is, thanks!
Technically there are already branches, the blocks of wood in the trees away from the trunk. But it'd be cooler to have actual branches ^ ^ The roots sound cool too.

Simply wouldn't work. It's a bit too complicated and sounds like too much work for just one piece of wood. Not tomention it would look a bit strange in such a cube-like world, how would they look?
Trees already provide plenty of wood, and can easily be regrown for more. So there really isn't need for that little bit of extra wood.

Please do drop by my More Plants thread for discussion on possible new trees. One of them is the Baldcypress, which is a tree particularly known for having giant roots. It's a swamp-loving tree and would liven up the swamp biome, you betcha!
A little lower down the thread, I post a bunch of links so you can see what sort of trees I mean, in case you're not familiar with them. I'm glad that we got a little more variety already, but three trees whose major difference is color and height is not doing justice to the sheer variety of trees we have on earth.
As far as roots: Well, as people say, what would it look like? On the other hand, I could easily design a surface for a Dirt Block that looked like there were roots growing through it. And perhaps that is all we would need for that.
Whether this would be a useful addition to Minecraft... I dunno. I can't see roots making useful sticks, or boards, so maybe all they'd be good for is firewood. Which isn't all that useful really, especially if they come attached to a full-grown tree.
I don't think we can do much better with branches than we are currently... though I've given it some thought and we might be able to make something similar to the flowers or the fence posts. It's not impossible, and it'd make the barren winter a lot more visually interesting, but I think it'd make the lag a lot worse too, especially in forests.
I've played another block game where trees do extend into the ground. Frankly, it's an annoying behaviour and only ever served to make me waste time gathering dirt to fill in the holes. If you need more wood, grow more trees. Tree farming is very nearly the easiest thing in Minecraft.

Yeah I agree, it would be too hard to make.

My nephews and I have started posting Minecraft videos on my YouTube channel! Fairly random, but enjoyable.
General schedule is 4 PM Mon-Fri and 10 AM Saturdays. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
