Basically instead of chests opening at the top, they open from the front, like the handle is on the front and you pull it out. Hope it makes sense, please leave a reply and vote!
BTW, this wouldn't replace the original chest, just be an alternative, if you have an idea for how to make that, tell me!
Or, maybe, Crates!
First, craft Planks into Reinforced Planks.
Craft those in a 3x3 crafting grid like Planks do for a Treasure chest, and you have something with low storage (3x3) but can be opened if at least one side is open.
I've proposed a version that opens from the front. In fact, I've proposed multiple types, for some visual variety and a more organized way to keep your stuff (every try to navigate a room full of identical chests?).
Open from the Top (like regular chests):
Regular Chest
Icebox
Open from the Front:
Cupboard
Dresser
Iceboxes would have a grey finish, and be made of Iron Ingots all around a Snow Block. I could see a front-open Icebox like a fridge, but the top-open one seems more reasonable for the Minecraft setting.
Cupboard would be a wooden box around a wooden slab (shelves!) or some similar recipe. It'd open from the front, so you could stick it on your ceiling or stack them on top of each other no problem.
I'm not sure about what would be a good Dresser pattern, but it'd open from the front, and you could stack them 2x1 or even 2x2 to get a joined texture that actually looks like a dresser. I'm not sure how the half-finished dresser would look though.
Anyway, point is to have visual variety. Where do I look for my food? In the Icebox, of course. Where do I look for clothing and wool? In the dresser. You don't have to make them - you could stick with all chests - but you could also choose to have a house that looks more like a house. And the distinction in what blocks them ought to allow better options for what you place nearby (I've wanted to have chests stuck to my ceiling for ages).
Seems reasonable enough to me.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
My nephews and I have started posting Minecraft videos on my YouTube channel! Fairly random, but enjoyable.
General schedule is 4 PM Mon-Fri and 10 AM Saturdays. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!

Yeah the original is good, so it wouldn't be taken out, its like an alternative. I'll add that, thanks.
A nice way to build a storage house, as they would look like ordinary Reinforced Planks.
