NPC AI is pretty bad right now. They have the intelligence of a pig.
They should be able to pathfind, open doors, and maybe even chop down trees, harvest crops, and mine.
They could trade with the player. They could send the player out to do chores and small quests for them. They could even tell the player about the Nether and the End, telling the player stories about the evils of Herobrine and his endermen; giving the player a reason to go to the final boss fight.
But right now, they do nothing.
Nothing.
Mojang, please work on their AI some more before Minecon, so we'll be able to do stuff with them, because as of right now they are stupid and pointless.
Pretty please?
Also, what do you, the community, think the NPCs should do?
And don't reply with "NPCs are stoopid" or "Story in minecraft is stoopid", actually post something intelligent.
I like the idea of story telling NPCs a lot! It would help new players a lot with finding out about the Nether and The End. Quests assigned by the NPCs could be something like, bring us a stack of wood, or go mining, or burn down that neighboring village over there.
