(I searched for "bronze" and found nothing, so here goes.)
Most of the time, leather armor and stone tools become obsolete/inefficient long before I have enough iron to do anything about it. I figured out the problem: we're missing the Bronze age in Minecraft. I'm suggesting a whole new set of items (armor/tools/sword) made of Bronze. As abundant as coal, but with maybe 3/4 or even 1/2 the durability of iron.
Bronze (in real life) is made by smelting copper and tin into an alloy. Obviously, it wouldn't make sense to just have "Bronze Ore" buried underground, but it would also be way too much work (coding or in-game) to mine two different metals and smelt them together, so I propose this:
Add a Copper Ore to the game (as abundant as coal, like I said above), which smelts into Copper ingots in a furnace. Re-smelting the copper ingots in the furnace turns them into Bronze ingots, which can be crafted into any tool or armor in the game. This way it's only adding one raw resource to the game, instead of two or more.
We've already got a set of chainmail armor that we can't even use. Turn it into bronze please. I'm tired of my only choices being Iron or Leather.
Please feel free to criticize. I know this isn't that important of a suggestion, but I would get alot of use out of it.
EDIT: When it comes to balancing, this HAS to be balanced correctly between stone/leather and iron to make it fit into the game. Otherwise, people will either skip Bronze and use Iron instead, or just use Leather/Stone until they have enough Iron. It HAS to be balanced.
It's either buildcraft or industrycraft (or maybe its called industrialcraft) but with those you can find copper and tin and macerate them into dust and craft them into bronze dust. this, obviously, can be smelted into bronze ingots. Problem Solved.
Don't post on a suggestion for Vanilla Minecraft with "Theres a mod for that".
Problem not solved. I don't use mods, and never intend to.
In principle, I agree with the sentiment that there should be a material more common than iron, and from which armor can be crafted. Maybe if Notch added cows back to the game, that would solve the problem :dry.gif:

Why the heck would it be "too much work"? We do that with a lot of other things in Minecraft. You have to hunt down two different types of mushrooms to make Mushroom Stew, combine Wool and Wood to make a bed, Sticks and Stones to make tools....
I don't see that there's anything preventing a couple good alloys (Bronze and Steel) aside from the Furnace interface and the matter of squeezing a couple new materials in between existing ones. I've an easy fix for both.
For the Furnace: Instead of smelting two metals together on the Furnace interface, just mix the two into Copper-Tin Mix (or some better name) and smelt that to get 2 Bronze Ingots.
For the Materials: Bump the higher ones up even further than they already are. So Stone stays where it is, Bronze becomes what Iron is, Iron becomes halfway between Iron and Diamond, Steel becomes what Diamond is, and Diamond becomes even better than it was.
The two alloys are natural choices for a survival crafting game, and teach people a teensy bit about the history of metal. And heck, we've already got the carbon (Charcoal).
