I had an idea, what if earthquakes occured in Minecraft. So I thought of some ways that they can be implemented. When an earthquake happens, completly randomly (like weather), your camera will shake and blocks that aren't supported by anything have a chance to obey physics and fall down. To make it fair I think only certain types of blocks should be able to fall. Dirt, leaves, wood planks, cobblestone, & smoothstone are some of the blocks I think should obey this, but all ores and silverfish blocks should stay where they are to perserve veins and strongholds. I also thought that if this were to occur anywhere on the map if could be very aggrivating, especially if your mining or fighting a mob, because you could get trapped in or if could be difficult to target the mob. Which led me to the idea that earthquakes should only occur near ravines, since they are similar for fissures and are less likely to be built on. This could also be a way to locate ravines, which some ravines have lots of showing ore and aren't always open to the surface. This might be a cool thing to add, just for the effect of the game. If you have any ideas to add or change, or you think this would be cool too, then please post a comment. :smile.gif:
New Addition: I just thought of a way to make it more fair, so that not every ravine becomes a fault. There could either be a whole new feature called fissures which is similar to ravines, but are open on the surface and aren't quite as deep, that way worry over ceiling blocks falling on you could be less likely and you won't have to go down as far to retrieve a block you might have lost if it fell down. This allows players to have some peace of mind, so they can build next to a ravine and they don't have to worry about earthquakes, if one were to occur (which would depend on their frequency to happen). Fissures would be similar to ravines in the way they appear, but faults will be placed closer to mountain biomes and the shore (since that is where they most occur in real life).
Very well described, good luck on gettin' this beauty implemented!

I am heavy posting guy. And THIS, is my signature. She gets 200 views every day and uses $400 custom fonts at 10,000 words per minute. It costs four hundred THOUSAND dollars to view this signature, for 12 seconds... Some people think they can out post me... Maybe... I've yet to see one out post signature.
Do you know how much of people's things this would break?
And please don't say "we can have an option to turn it on/off" because it's not like there can be an option for everything.
[megasarcasm]Why don't we add an option for pigs to be blue and say "Flippity dippity ding dong" as well![/megasarcasm]
Look, almost everything I made is made of wood and cobblestone in some way. I don't want everything I ever made completely totaled by an earthquake just because it makes it easier for you to find ores. I for one can't stop finding them, I'd gladly give you the 3 stacks of iron ingots I have gathering dust.

Thats why I established a few things that would balance it a bit. Earthquakes would occur around ravines maybe a 50 block radius, or lower. It's intention isn't to find ores easily or destoy everything, they will simply add physics to a random amount of blocks (a select few types). If a block is supported by another block underneath it than if wouldn't be affected, wooden planks could be replaced by tree trunks instead (basically lower grade blocks would be affected). I'm not suggesting that this detonates tnt on the ground, breaks ladders, torches, minecart track, etc..., I'm suggesting in specific areas of the map, only when your near the chunks it will occur in, certain blocks will act like sand/gravel during the earthquake (meaning they will fall down until they land on another block, NOT get destroyed or disappear). I am only thinking of something interesting that could be a new and challenging experiance in minecraft. Sure it needs to be fixed in certain areas, like what blocks should be allowed to fall, how often they should occur, and the amount that will fall before or that makes an earthquake stop. Please post your comments on changes that should be made. Hating on it won't solve issues with it (I'm not saying that you are necessaraly hating neospector).
If a block's chances of falling depend on the block type (for example, leaves = 0%, dirt = 100%, cobble = 50%, smooth stone = 10%, etc.), then this would be SO AWESOME.

That is a cool way to set up the chance of falling for certain blocks. Good idea.

I would like to give credit to you for giving me the idea of a better name for the forum post, I have changed it.
