So this would basically be a block that looks like any other block, ecxept it looks a little broken up. When you step on them they break away, which can lead to a long fall into maybe a small pool of water into a dungeon. These would be rare of course, but they would provide an intersting new way of coming across dungeons. You could craft them too, maybe by putting the desired block(dirt or stone or something) in an X formation.
Its only an idea, but if you have ways to improve on it, tell me! It's much appreciated.
Thanks to Altoid 2 for pointing this out to me, they wouldn't crumble instantly but just quickly, so if your aware you can get out of the way in time. They could probably make a slight crumbling noise too.
Problem: This can be used to cover up pits on servers that griefers dug filled with lava. And if they're rare, then they'll disappear easily. And if they're craftable, they're too easy to get.
So, I think this is a mod idea.

[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
The block shouldn't break instantly though, it should just crumble apart somewhat quickly (if you're aware you will have just enough time to get out of the way).
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).

Perhaps it would make a sound as well (not obnoxious/super loud but it should be noticeable if you aren't daydreaming about hugging creepers).

Yeah your right about that, hmm so maybe non-craftable and a little more common. Idk, but thanks for the input!

How about dungeon/mineshaft chests?

I don't play SMP so much, so I'm thinking mostly of the single-player aspects.
I was thinking the other day of how the Silverfish sits inside a block that looks exactly like a regular block (one of several types), but upon trying to harvest that block, the Silverfish comes out.
And I thought, why not use that method to disguise unstable blocks on the ceilings of caves and tunnels? I mean, collapsing tunnels has long been the bugaboo of miners IRL, and many people have proposed ways to add this to Minecraft that involve all sorts of calculations about how big you're digging your mine... but why not just add blocks to the map generation routines, and have those blocks sitting on the top of some (but not all) of the caves that get generated?
The blocks would act just like suspended sand - any disturbance nearby and they tumble to the ground (and any gravel or sand on top of them falls too). However, upon reaching the ground, they become normal cobblestone blocks (broken by the fall).
The same could apply to pitfalls, blocks under your feet that just break away. However, it seems like this would cause undue paranoia, if there wasn't any way to tell, or if the pitfall was an insta-trap. So either the blocks need some visual indicator (or perhaps your footsteps change pitch when you near them), or, as Altoid2 said, they could crumble a little slowly so you have a chance to back up (or jump to the other side fast).
Only thing is, if they're no more than a "walk to the other side and they've fallen away behind you" trap, the pitfalls would pose 0 challenge to the normal Minecraft player who has a few blocks on hand. So it's gotta require that you respond with the jump key.
In Ultima: Quest of the Avatar, you can tell a secret wall from a regular wall by the difference of a single pixel. Perhaps that could work here? These guys could look like regular stone but have 1 pixel out of place, in a way that's hard to spot until you're right next to it (and have enough light).
Anyway, as far as griefer traps, just make it as impossible to place these blocks normally. You'd need a world editor to place them yourself (like Vechs uses to make sand traps in the Super Hostile series). If you cheat one into your inventory, then upon placing it it just falls like sand.

My nephews and I have started posting Minecraft videos on my YouTube channel! Fairly random, but enjoyable.
General schedule is 4 PM Mon-Fri and 10 AM Saturdays. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!

I like the idea about not being able to place them.
Yeah, the more I think about this, the more I think that if they worked like suspended sand, looked like regular stone (mostly), and upon falling turned into regular stone, they could really function.
I want unstable cave ceilings that you don't see coming! No more of this "Gasp! It's a clearly visible unstable sand ceiling and I will stay away from it, good thing I spotted it ha ha!"

That's a good point, thanks i'll change that.
