Many kinds of challenges has been created for different ways of playing Minecraft. Some are simple as No Mining(you can't mine anything), others are a series of quests(kill some zombies, then destroy a dungeon, then kill monsters in Nether...) and with time, they are becoming more and more complex(as Tree Spirit Challenge: create a tree, and never step outside of it's wood. Objective: to make it grow the most you can.)
With time, as the players constantly creates new and amazing ideas, some challenges will demand modding. Well, Notch has said already he would give in the future support for modding, so why not as well support for Challenges?
Here's how it would work. Challenges would be an extra mode of playing Minecraft. When chosen, a list of challenges would be there for the player. The map loaded after it would be made specifically to that challenge, that includes changes in Minecraft rules, things as "getting damage in light level above 7", "being able to breath underwater, but not above", "time limit before dying: 10 minutes" and "Playing as a creeper."
Finishing a challenge would let two options to the player: choosing another one(challenge is made in another part of that world) or keeping the world. In this case, an option would be given to which new game mode that world would be used.
I like the idea, but are you saying that the map generation should change for each challenge? I think that using the normal map generation would be best.
I would survive 28 days in a creeper apocalypse. GENERATION 24: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment. If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 99% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 1% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens

That would depend of the Challenge itself.
A Map Challenge(survive in a island, do a farm, do a castle in it...) would only need a change of coordinates to place there the blocks that are needed.
A Rules Challenge(you can't walk in sun, you have temporary flying skills, meteors fall from the sky) would need a change in how events and commands alter the game state. A map generation change would not be necessary.
A World Challenge(grass grows uncontrollable, the Corruption of Terraria - for those who don't know, it's a spreading biome that changes stone in unbreakable blocks, peaceful animals in dangerous creatures and adds flying aberrations and giant worms to try to destroy you - to be stopped, dangerous environment as volcanoes and blizzards...) would need perhaps a change in the map generator, perhaps not.
But considering what a Challenge can be, it's a necessity, but not always used.

So, what do you think?
