You're not being very informative. Why not? I'm not saying the actual website username, just the name that appears in-game. The ban list could still work if it referenced the login, and players could change their names and passwords if they wanted to. Tons of online games have this feature, and I think it'd be a really nice addition.

I think password would be reasonable. But username would interfere with banning and the like I would assume.
Not if the online login stayed the same. Make the banlist reference that and the name that appears in-game be something different. Or add IP bans, it's not that big of a deal.
I really can't think of a reason this shouldn't be added.

Person: Person1 stop griefing!
Person1: No, hahahaha I'm destroying your crap!
Person2: /kick Person1
Person1 has been kicked
Person4 has joined the game
Person2: Is that person1? How can we tell, he's changed his name!

If I can change my display name, I can abuse it.
Why would you kick them if you didn't want them to come back? I don't see your logic.
Someone comes in, starts griefing, so you kick them. That implies you're giving them a second chance anyway. And when you ban them, they can't come back no matter what their name is.
So it doesn't matter if someone you kick changes their name or not, because by kicking them you're saying, "Don't do that anymore, but feel free to come back." Honestly, I've never kicked a griefer. If I want them off my server, I want them off for good.
Or you could always make it so admins can get login names of everyone via console.
This is no different from what happens on all kinds of multiplayer games. I don't see why everyone is so against it.

'Bob42' is a respected regular in a server, but always uses the username 'SuperAdmin'.
'imagriefer' is a griefer, and knows the above fact. Before that other guy can get on, he uses the username 'SuperAdmin'.
'Bob42' here joins and either isn't allowed, or is given the username 'SuperAdmin (1)'
And/or what of people simply logging on using the 'display name' of someone's username while away?

---> vede claimed Notch said this (and it is awesome).
Why can't Notch just have us submit more personal info when purchasing from him? that way on his record, he has more than one way of differentiating between accounts. That way it would be possible to have us change usernames without him losing record of our purchases.
Runescape added a system to change usernames, but it was still possible to see the person's most recent name before the current one by mousing over a symbol next to their name.
and about the password, can't you already do that by going to preferences on the minecraft site?

I'm not going to take sides here, but I suppose, even if you are allowed to change your username, the account would remain the same (ie. bans still active, etc.).

Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Here's a little hypothetical situation:
'Bob42' is a respected regular in a server, but always uses the username 'SuperAdmin'.
'imagriefer' is a griefer, and knows the above fact. Before that other guy can get on, he uses the username 'SuperAdmin'.
'Bob42' here joins and either isn't allowed, or is given the username 'SuperAdmin (1)'
