Late last night, I saw tons of people hating the dragon egg idea. So I figured a way to mix Dragons with regular Minecraft.
Dragons Nest - Would be an underground structure lit up by torches lanterns, with 5-10 live dragons. These often would stick out of the sides of mountains to look cool. The caves would be surrounded by Lapis Lazuli, Diamonds, and sometimes Gold. There would be 1-8 egg nests, with 3-5 eggs in each nest. If you mined a jewel or took an egg, the live dragons would attack.
Now, assuming you got a bunch of jewels and an egg from the nest. What next? You build an incubator.
Crafting recipe:
The glass would actually a glass block, and underneath a lava bucket.
You would place the egg into this incubator, and after 16 days, it would hatch. It would be fueled with coal. (Credit goes to the people of the Aether mod)
When hatched, the newborn dragon chick would occupy a space one block long. It requires Lapis Lazuli to eat. It requires a nest to sleep in.
Crafting Recipe:
Female eggs and dragons can be purple, gold, silver or spotted blue and yellow. Male eggs and dragons can be Navy blue, red, brown or white.
Dragons past toddler hood would follow you around, unless you ask them to stay.
GROWTH CHART
Child - Occupies 5 blocks. 8 Second Duration.
Teen - Occupies 7 blocks. 18 duration. No longer requires nest.
Mature - Occupies 12 blocks. 35 duration. Capable of hunting cattle and mating, producing another egg.
The total growth process takes about 6 months (Hey, I'm just trying to take down the power a notch... hee hee XD)
Preteenage dragons deal 3 hearts of damage to monsters. Teens deal five damage, and adults deal 8 hearts.
FLYING
Dragons cannot fly indefinitely (See chart for durations).
For you to fly on a dragon you will have to create a heavy duty saddle, called a Dragon Saddle.
Crafting Recipe:

That's just about it. I think this would give a couple of items a few more uses, and give you a very special, yest minecrafty expierence.
I hope this was cool and gets inputted into the game. So adios!
I like the idea of being able to get a dragon egg and take care of the creature once it hatches until you can ride it.
I would prefer less stages, just to keep it simple. Baby, Teen and Adult, still keeping loyal to your descriptions of each stage regarding flight duration and so on.
However, I can see the downside of everyone having a dragon and it could kind of lose its relevance and become common among all players.
That's why it would take around 6 months of actual, real world time for your dragon to hatch. It would discourage people who are impatient and unwilling to care for it for that long. So people who are really willing to get a companion and make a real commitment can get a fully realized dragon. Although less stages does sound better, thanks XD
