I suggest that Furnaces should be changed somewhat.
They should now have two output slots for the smelted item and one output slot for the fuel.
Certain items, such as ores, when smelted, place the normal smelting item in the first slot and a secondary item in the second output slot (Smooth Stone is the secondary item in the case of ores). All fuels, when used as such, will deposit a single unit of Ashes in the output slot. Ashes can be placed on the ground, and when stepped on, they are destroyed. However, they will also produce large amounts of dust, blinding the player or mob that stepped on it (like a smoke trap).
That concludes my suggestion. If you like it, please click the green + at the bottom right of my post!
And here's an image of how the new GUI might look:
Yes, maybe a little overpowered. Perhaps maybe an "Iron Furnace" crafted out of Iron Ingots would serve this purpose and the regular furnace would work normally.
iron furnaces cook things faster with a byproduct waste.
maybe whatever the iron furnace is next to turns color, like smoke, or even in a 8x8 space. when it gets too dark, if not cleaned or moved, it lowers the light in the room creating a situation where monsters could spawn
